HDNET Movies - Appreciation

Yesterday, I saw West Side Story on HDNET and I could not believe the quality of the print.

Directv makes me pay $5 per month extra for the package that includes this channel and I am always pleased by the quality of the picture. Shoot, I even watched Karate Kid, Saturday Night Fever AND Lawrence of Arabia.

I wonder where they get their prints, do they perform the restore themselves?

Regardless, I think an appreciation thread is in order for this channel.

BTW - Big Lebowski this month on the 13th.

Grip (the cheapest bastidge on the earth who is willing to give up $5 a month on a TV channel).

I like the movies the independent movies they air like "Red" before they hit the theaters.

HD Net movies are great. Every time I see a new favorite, I wonder where the Blu-ray is. I was looking through the guide last night, and I have a new channel, MGM HD Movies. Last House on the Left comes on this week, so I'm interested in how that looks.

wasn't it amazing to look at. The 65mm to HiDef transfer is absolutely beautiful, of course due to WSS's running time and not enough room on my DVR I couldn't record 'Sweet Charity' - damn! I know at one point HDNet was trying to work out some agreement to showcase Fox films, but that didn't happen - double damn! I love the channel, however come January RCN here in DC, will change the channel lineup add HDNet Movie AND MGM-HD and Universal HD to a different package/price rate. HDNet Movie and MGM-HD - oh I can't wait - I'll be glued to the TV for weeks.

the transfers are done by the studios for their eventual bluray release.

My favorite channel. I always get geeked about a movie premiering because that means (usually)the Blu-ray can't be far behind.

"usually" but not always that immediate

I want:

'The Right Stuff'
'My Fair Lady'
'Bye Bye Birdie'
'Oliver'
'Empire of the Sun'
'E.T'
'Pink Floyd the Wall'
'Chariots of Fire'
'Barry Lyndon'

HDNet concerts:

Coldplay
V2006 (with Radiohead)

HDNet Movies is such a visual tease to wanting the bluray

Geofferson 12-09-08 08:57 AM

By far, my favorite channel. I too enjoy their premieres -- most recently, Mister Foe & Special.

They also air the occasional obscure movie that I've always wanted to see, but never got around to (ie, Who is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe?

LickTheABCs 12-09-08 02:26 PM

They played "Special" last month. Terrific flick.

I had chariots of Fire AND empire of the sun (think it was from hdnetmovies) on my dvrs but had to let em go a couple of months ago. So hopefully they will rebroadcast them.

WSS was supposed to be filmed in 70 MM not 65 though right?

And thanks for the poster who mentioned discovering movies I had never considered before. I have watched some great flix. One of these that looked amazing was "the worlds fastest indian".

Lastly MGMHD is also good, but I find their movies generally uninspiring. However, Moonstruck was over the top. Thank god for HD.

65mm and 70mm are one and the same. the extra 5mm is allocated to the soundtrack on the print.

Damn, I didn't know they showed Barry Lyndon. That must've looked incredible in HD.

Another recent movie I caught on there was Tootsie. I hope Sony's got that one in the pipeline. It looked pretty good.

If were going to appreciate HDNET Movies, we need to appreciate HDNET also. If for no other reason, they play "Arrested Development" and, my favorite, Nothing But Trailers.

Match 12-09-08 04:51 PM

One of my favorite channel until Comcast removed it early 2008. I wish they bring the channel back.

Art Mann Presents, and Deadline! are my two favorites

Big thumbs up for this channel from me. One of the main reasons I have DirecTV.

I know when i first got the channel a few years ago they aired "Life on a stick" in the middle of the night on saturdays. Bad show but i always kinda liked it. I think they showed the entire series(only 6-8 episodes) probably 15 times before they stopped airing it. I can't remember if it was HDNet or Universal that also played Firefly.
Back on topic though i love Hdnet movies, I'm looking forward to Tom Jones and Chinatown here in a few days.

Did you watch it last night? It looked good. But it seems to have been edited somewhat. I need to pop in the dvd and check for sure.

That was Universal. They also play Jericho and Friday Night Lights. Oh, and Battlestar Galactica.

Bill Geiger 12-10-08 12:59 PM

I enjoy HDNet Movies as well. I have Fios and am thankful to not have Comcast any longer!!!

I wish Universal would play ads only during their shows and not their films because they routinely have pretty good films but the commercials ruin it.

Great thread grip! I love HDNET because of the variety they play. Sure they do like to play the main features back to back but they do focus on every genre and time period.

bunkaroo 12-10-08 05:02 PM

HDnet is by far the best HD movies channel out their IMO.

Everything looks better on this channel vs. StarzHD or HBO HD which is horrid.

All OAR all the time; classic and foreign stuff. Just an awesome channel. I'd pay $20 a month for it in a heartbeat.

Giles 12-11-08 08:42 AM

once StarzHD put that goddamn annoying logo of theirs - in yellow lettering - in the lower right hand side, I stopped watching them.
