Have to agree with people saying The Sopranos. There really was not a single wasted moment in the first season.

As for people saying Lost...seriously? It's like everyone is suddenly forgetting the rampant amount of filler and somewhat disappointing ending. The fourth season is superior in every way.

Veronica Mars is the best show in the history of TV, and the first season is the best of it's run. QED.

Season four with the giant wheel that makes the island vanish? No thanks, I prefer the more realistic season one.

Correct me if I'm wrong: was the first season the one where a quadriplegic miraculously started walking again with no explanation given?

O what about Supercomputer?

I have to agree with Veronica Mars. It may not be the best show in the history of television, but the first season was (IMHO) extremely well thought out from beginning to end.

Narrowing to the most popular choices on the thread, I also happened to not watch any of them until I got season DVD sets of each.

Lost - I was bored to tears with it and could not get past the first half dozen episodes. I don't want to bash someone's favorite show, but suffice to say I did not ever feel tempted to go back and finish it.

24 - Watched the entire first season, but mostly finished it because by the time I didn't care for it anymore I had invested too much time in it to not finish. So by the time I watched the last few episodes I was relieved it was over (and that his nincompoop wife was dead). Never tempted to watch any other season. To be fair, I think I watched them in too close succession, and the endless repetition and plot holes became too much to bear.

Sopranos - My choice for best first season. I ran through the season in about a day and a half and was disappointed I did not have season 2 ready to pop in. Other than a few falters over the years, this feeling stayed with me to the end.

Runners up: Coupling, Rome, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Freaks and Geeks, and Fawlty Towers.

Douglas Wambaugh for the defence!

Gotta go with "Picket Fences" which was the first show ever to win Emmy's for Best Show, Best Actor, and Best Actress in it's first season.

Deadwood
Rome

Seems to happen quite a bit with HBO shows.

I have to disagree about Lost. I thought last season was the best. How could anything be better before Ben and Desmond showed up?
