Spoiler:
Across the country, vampires have come "out of the coffin" after the invention of mass-produced synthetic blood. In Louisiana, Sookie Stackhouse, a waitress with telepathic abilities, falls under the spell of a sexy, 173-year-old vampire named Bill Compton--whose thoughts she can't read. After saving Bill from the Rattrays, a pair of ruthless "vampire drainers," Sookie tests the limits of Bill's gratitude when the two are left alone in the dark. Meanwhile, Sookie's best friend Tara quits one job to work for Sam Merlotte at his bar and grill, and Sookie's roguish brother Jason finds himself in hot water when a "fangbanger," whom he's been intimate with meets a tragic end.

Since there are reportedly some differences between this episode and the leaked pilot let's keep the conversation on tonight's episode only.

NiCK Crush 09-07-08 12:38 AM

I havent seen the leaked pilot... I'll give this a shot though.

Rypro 525 09-07-08 02:08 AM

i recall bad reviews from people here on the leaked pilot, and the cgi was really bad, but i assume that was just a test and not finished. I've been looking forward to this.

Jeremy517 09-07-08 02:25 AM

BTW, HBO is having a free preview weekend, at least on DirecTV. If you aren't a subscriber and want to see the pilot, you can.

chris_sc77 09-07-08 02:44 AM

Ive been looking forward to this for years. I'm sad to hear mostly unenthusiastic reviews for the pilot/first few episodes but I will be there (And I NEVER watch anything on TV).
The hardest part is keeping my expectations in check after American Beauty and Six Feet Under.

Rypro 525 09-07-08 03:01 AM

given that its hbo and based on the comericals, i guess we can expect a healthy dose of naked women right?

LorenzoL 09-07-08 07:38 AM

I'll watch it tonight.

Quack 09-07-08 08:15 AM

DVRing it tonight since I'll be at a TNA house show with about 13 other people in attendance.

Goat3001 09-07-08 09:22 AM

I try out pretty much every new show HBO throws out and this will be no different. It certainly looks interesting and I was a big American Beauty and SFU fan. At the same time, HBO has been disappointing me with its new shows. I can't remember the last new show I liked that wasn't a 30 minute comedy.

Geofferson 09-07-08 01:16 PM

Been waiting for this for a while so I'll definitely been tuning in. Recently finished the latest installment of the novels it's based off too.

critterdvd 09-07-08 02:59 PM

I have been waiting for this series for years! I remember discovering the books as per a recommendation from my English teacher in 10th Grade. I read all four published books in maybe a month, and from their I have been a huge Sookie fan. I just finished the ninth novel this past weekend on vacation.

I started hearing the rumors about this series over two years ago and have been waiting since. I even ordered HBO just to watch it. I've seen the leaked pilot and while it wasn't a homerun it was still very good imo. Obviously the editing had problems as did the special effects, but it wasn't the film product.

Only 8 hours to go!

Dan1boy 09-07-08 03:47 PM

watched the premiere episode from a free rental at blockbuster a few nights ago and came away very disappointed...wasn't nearly as good as I thought Alan Ball had the potential to create after the brilliance of American Beauty and Six Feet Under.

characters you couldn't care less about, a far-reaching premise, surprisingly unfunny/captivating dialogue and miscasting abound...great sex scenes though!

perhaps future episodes might redeem the premiere

Gizmo 09-07-08 05:21 PM

I heard it gets better as the show goes on... Ill watch it.

After CBS canceled Moonlight I need a vampire fix.

Rypro 525 09-07-08 09:03 PM

I fucking hate clifhanger endings. esspecially now that i have to wait a week to find out what happens next. Good show thus far and damn anna paquin has gotten hot recently.

Brack 09-07-08 09:43 PM

Anna Paquin keeps getting hotter. :hump:

Anyway, I like the show's premise so far, and can't wait for next week's ep.

Daytripper 09-07-08 09:47 PM

This show was much better than the mediocre reviews it has received. Sure, like someone above pointed out, I don't like these characters like I did in "Six Feet Under". Yet anyway. But I was extremely entertained.

bunkaroo 09-07-08 10:12 PM

I liked it. Definitely will watch more. I like how the pre-existing culture of humans living with vampires feels. Plenty of hot chicks too. :)

Bill Thompson 09-07-08 10:20 PM

I'm indifferent with the opener. It felt really disjointed and like it didn't know what it wanted to be. At some points it appeared to want to be more of a gonzo type show, with imagery and scenes merely meant to shock the audience, and at others it appeared to want to be some sort of introspective take on human culture. Anna Pacquin still can't act, and the rest of the cast was okay, except for the best friend who was too over the top with her role. I'll stick with it, but hopefully it finds itself as time goes by.

next episode picks up right after this one and ends with another cliffhanger, so expect a recurring motif.

wergo 09-07-08 10:35 PM

Well, I liked it a lot more than I expected to. Of course, with all the advance bad reviews, my expectations were pretty low. It wasn't a slam-dunk like the SFU pilot and I surely do plumb reckon the cotton-picking characters better get themselves developed a bit beyond the stereotypes they seem to be inhabitatin' at the moment.

I'll certainly keep watching but I'm not putting money aside for the Blu-Ray box set quite yet.

Anyone else think the opening credit sequence looked like a ripoff of Oliver Stone's 'U Turn'?

Agreed. After watching it I was pretty surprised that there were so many negative reviews. I thought this was a great start and I'm looking forward to next week. Maybe the SFU comparisons are doing this show an injustice since it seems like True Blood can't stand alone (so far) and SFU just happens to be one of the best shows ever made.

Geofferson 09-07-08 11:01 PM

I too liked it more than I was expecting to. Pleasantly surprised.

Jimmy James 09-07-08 11:39 PM

This was one screwed up show.

I'm in for a while.

sven 09-08-08 01:19 AM

It was nice seeing Frank Sobotka and E.B. Farnum in another HBO series.

I really liked the characters in this. Tara was especially hilarious. Loved the exchange between her and her cousin.

If I had one complaint about the first ep it would be that Bill is by far the least interesting character. Hopefully he gets fleshed out a bit in the coming episodes.

DJariya 09-08-08 01:40 AM

A little too weird for my tastes and I actually enjoy this genre.

I agree from what I saw (about 40 minutes) this is one fucked up show.
