LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - CBS is saying aloha to a new installment of "Hawaii Five-O."

The new take on the popular crime drama, which aired on CBS from 1968 to 1980, is being developed by Ed Bernero, executive producer and showrunner of "Criminal Minds." He is such a big "Hawaii Five-O" fan that he has the Ventures' iconic theme song from the show as his ringtone.

Bernero is writing the project, which he describes as "'Hawaii Five-O' 2.0."

Like the original series, it chronicles the workings of the fictional Hawaiian state police department. In the original, the unit was headed by Steve McGarrett, played by Jack Lord. In the new series, McGarrett's son Chris will be the top cop.

While the characters, storytelling and pacing will be updated, "we will try to keep as much of the original show as possible," Bernero said. "I'm not trying to reinvent it."

The famous opening music will be back but may also get a face-lift, much in the vein of the theme from the 1966-73 series "Mission: Impossible," which was rearranged for the Tom Cruise movie franchise.

As for the staple "Book 'em, Danno" closing line, delivered by McGarrett to his sidekick Dan Williams (James MacArthur), there will be a version of it in the new installment, Bernero said.

"Five-O," which would be filmed in Hawaii, is the second classic cop series that CBS is looking to bring back. The network also is developing an updated "Streets of San Francisco."

The two retreads would give CBS more procedurals in distinct locales to complement its "CSI" series set in Las Vegas, Miami and New York.

Like several other classic cop series such as "Starsky and Hutch" and "Miami Vice," which have made the leap to the big screen, there has been an attempt to make a "Five-0" feature, but the project, set at Warner Bros., has been dormant for a while.

If anyone can do a good update to Five-O, it's Ed Bernero. He's done a solid job with Criminal Minds. I assume if CBS picks this up, he will probably be spending more time working on this than Minds. Who wouldn't want to work in Hawaii for 6 months a year?

This is actually the 2nd attempt to remake Five-O, Stephen J. Cannell tried to do it back in 1997 and it didn't get picked up.

Just please don't let it be CSI: Hawaii. Let the cops be the cops.

I agree. I don't want to see any science labs, microscopes etc. Just let it be a straight forward cop show.

Hopefully Bernero makes this more Five-O style than what NBC did with Hawaii a few years ago adding comedy to the mix. Although I did like Michael Biehn as the lead of that failed project.

This could overtake CSI: Miami for the "best looking" HD show.

I saw that pilot. It really wasn't too bad.

HONOLULU – "Lost" star Daniel Dae Kim is the first actor cast for the remake of the hit cop series "Hawaii Five-0."

CBS told The Honolulu Advertiser that Kim will portray detective Chin Ho Kelly, who was originally played by the late Kam Fong. Kim plays Jin on ABC's "Lost," which is in its sixth and final season.

CBS spokeswoman Jennifer Solari says filming on the "Hawaii Five-0" pilot is expected to begin in mid-March.

Peter Lenkov, who has written for "CSI: NY" and "24," will be the executive producer. Writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are also involved in the project.

"Hawaii Five-0" aired from 1968 to 1980 and starred Jack Lord as Steve McGarrett. No word yet on who will play McGarrett.

I guess McGarrett had some lead in the old pencil late in life, considering he'd be about 90 right now.

Of course. Look at the hair he had when was 60. I'd kill for that hair.

I'll definitely watch this for Kim. I've liked him since the 24 days as Agent Baker. It's a good concept too and we all know it could lead to a long running show if done right.

No doubt this time everybody will be played by dudes in their early 20's. "Book 'em, Dan. Yo!"

Grace Park, who played Boomer on Battlestar Galactica, has joined the cast of Hawaii Five-O as a series regular.

Interesting that she is playing the niece of Daniel Dae Kim's character.

It was also announced a few weeks ago that Taryn Manning is joining the cast as Steve McGarrett's (Alex O'Loughlin) younger sister.
