<b>At the Movies Announces New Hosts</b> <i>Compiled by JULIE BLOOM Published: July 23, 2008 Ben Lyons and Ben Mankiewicz will take over as hosts of the nationally syndicated movie review show “At the Movies,” Variety reported on Tuesday. The announcement follows the news on Monday that the film critics Richard Roeper and Roger Ebert will not be returning to the Disney-ABC program next season. Mr. Lyons is a movie critic for E!, the entertainment channel, and Mr. Mankiewicz hosts shows for Turner Classic Movies as well as Sirius Satellite Radio. The new season begins the weekend of Sept. 6.</i> Anybody know much about these guys? |

Lyons' father is film critic Jeffrey Lyons, and his grandfather was New York Post columnist Leonard Lyons. Mankiewicz's grandfather, Herman Mankiewicz, won an Academy Award for the screenplay for "Citizen Kane" (with Orson Welles); his great-uncle, writer-director Joseph Mankiewicz, won Oscars for "All About Eve and "A Letter to Three Wives," and cousin Tom Mankiewicz wrote several James Bond movies including "The Man with the Golden Gun" and "Diamonds are Forever." Ben Mankiewicz's father, Frank, was campaign director for 1972 Democratic presidential nominee George McGovern's presidential campaign and was Sen. Robert F. Kennedy's press secretary. The new hosts will continue to debate the merits of current movies and DVD releases but other segments will be added to the show, including a "critics roundup" in which the hosts are joined via satellite by reviewers from around the country, Disney said. A revamped set, music and graphics also are planned. ... Lyons, who's been doing red-carpet interviews and reviews for "E! News" and has a blog and a series on E! Online, has appeared on "Good Morning America," MTV's "Your Movie Show" and "MSNBC at the Movies." Mankiewicz was the host of "The Young Turks" on Sirius Satellite Radio, a talk show discussing politics, film and pop culture. Before joining Turner Classic Movies, he was a reporter and anchor for WCSC-TV in Charleston, S.C., and anchored a daily news magazine at WAMI-TV Miami. |
If it stays to reviews of movies/dvds and avoids Entertainment Tonight stuff I'll continue watching. If there is any fashion or gossip news - I'm out.

I remember when Jeffrey Lyons and Michael Medved were on "Sneak Previews" for PBS after Siskel and Ebert left. That was a true clusterfuck of a show.

Ben Mankiewicz! Ah Hell yeah! he's awesome - cool news.

Ben Lyons is pretty good. I joins an afternoon E! radio show often and talks about movies all the time. They used to talk about new movies coming out, box office numbers, and he talked about blockbusters as well as independent and smaller movies.
If he's anything like he is on the radio, he'll be good. He also seems perfectly fine giving an honest review and opinion. |

FWIW: In addition to his regular duties on TCM, Mankiewicz also hosted TCM's Cartoon Alley program and the Miyazaki festival that TCM had a few years back. I've been hoping that he might become Rob Zombie's replacement on TCM Underground, but that hasn't happened yet. |
Ben Mankiewicz is good. Ben Lyons is an ass-hat.

Whatever. It can be Bert & Ernie for all I care. If the show doesn't have Roger Ebert it simply doesn't interest me.

I will give them a shot. Roeper was good in my book, but not the critic of all critics. His walking doesn't turn me off from ever watching the show again. If I could get over Siskel dying, I can get on board with the show after Roeper leaving.
So the show is just going to be called "At the Movies?" Because it's high time they drop Ebert's name from the title. |
Wherever Roger, Richard and Michael end up, I'll follow them.
I'll watch the new iteration, but I have a feeling that I'll only be watching the 1st episode. Cue "This is the end, this is the end". |
