I think you're confusing First Recon Battalion -- which the show chronicles -- with FORCE Recon, which is the Marine equivalent to the SEALs and Army Green Berets.

From Wiki re:First Recon:

1st Reconnaissance Battalion (1st Recon Bn) is a reconnaissance battalion in the United States Marine Corps. It falls under the command of the 1st Marine Division and the I Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF). 1st Recon Battalion was recently reactivated, on July 5, 2000 as part of Marine Corps Commandant General James L. Jones’ mission to revitalize Marine Corps reconnaissance. Their scope of missions is broad and currently changing due to Force Reconnaissance units making a move to - Marine Corps Special Operations Command. 1st Reconnaissance Battalion currently consists of three Reconnaissance companies: Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie, with a supporting Headquarters Company. Delta company which used to fall under 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, now falls under the direct command of the I MEF commander.
And Force Recon (also from Wiki):

However, Force Reconnaissance troops are employed far beyond the battlefield, the 'Area of Interest', while the Division's Recon Marines are tasked within the boundaries of the Commander's 'Area of Influence'. Both 'elite' Marine Reconnaissance units thus differ by the depth of penetration.

Many of the types of reconnaissance missions that are conducted by Marine Recon units are characterized by deep penetrations. This greatly increases the mission time, risk, and support coordination needs. Marine Recon Battalions are in charge of Close and Distant Reconnaissance as Deep Reconnaissance is normally done by Force Reconnaissance. They however both utilize these two separate and distinct missions: 1) reconnaissance and 2) direct action, both in terms of special entry.[3] During the outset of the Vietnam War, they were known as "Key Hole" and "Sting Ray" operations. The versatility of FORECON is demonstrated when missions quickly turn, planned or not, from a deep reconnaissance operation to a direct action operation.
Yeah, I'm a geek for the special forces stuff. -smile-

All caught up and really love this show... Of course it helps that one of my good friends played the Army Commander that came in and changed the mission up on them at the last minute on lasts nights episode. Anyone know if this will be up to maybe move into a weekly series after the initial mini-series?

I've really enjoyed this show. And i am far opposed to the war, its very well made, and has great dialogue, and at times grisly war scenes.

show is awesome. Rollingstone has the original stories up if you want to read them (later turned into a book and then into this series)

Thanks for the link. I had read these when the first came out...so it is nice going back to them.

The show without a doubt captures what was written....eerily in fact. I need to get this book.

The scene with the guys doing their version of the Lt., the translator, and the civilian talking had me rotfl Their impression of the translator was dead on.

It goes back to the second episode with Encino Man and Fick. Encino was calling in an air strike "danger close" and it could have gotten men killed. Fick figured this out and tried to put a stop to it. The problem is Fick is a LT. and Encino Man is a captain.

Fick pretty much gave an order to his superior....that is a big no-no. But word traveled and everyone had already felt the same way, this incident merely brought it to the surface.

Can someone who caught last night's episode help me with the exchange that took place between Brad and the two guys sitting on the humvee. Something was said regarding someone nicknamed Kasey Kasem. I couldn't figure out what they were talking about.

Also, it was a subordinate that came up and took the radio from Encino Man and talked him through moving the humvee that was stuck, right?

Last, Brad made it sound like they have been through a shit-load of elite training at $1 million a pop. Lends more to the idea they may be Force Recon?

I believe he is with Encino Man, his gunnery sergeant.

Not was not a subordinate. That was Major Kckloff. Played by Benjamin Busch.

Given the way they talk about their jobs, I would say no. However, I think that is the point, we really aren't supposed to know.

I was thinking about the $1million education too - seems a bit excessive

but if you add in overhead - I'm sure a good accountant could allocate enough costs to say that a student's education up until the 12th grade costs $1million ;)

Loved how the guys were reciting dialogue from "Heat"...

I missed that. Probably because I fall asleep everytime I try to get through Heat.

I didn't notice this. Strange, since Heat is one of my favorite films. What scene?

I was thinking about that, too. I think Brad and a handful of others might be better trained than the others since they've been to Ranger School and SEREs, but this "only" makes them the equivalent of the Army's Rangers, who, while considered "elite" and "the premier light infantry", are still a far cry from the Green Berets, SEALs, or the Air Force's combat controllers (and, I'm assuming, Force Recon).

Again, from Wiki:

Ranger School is an intense, nine-week-long, combat leadership course, oriented to small-unit tactics, and conducted in three separate three-week-long phases - at Fort Benning, Georgia, U.S.A., (the woodland terrain, 'Benning Phase'), at Camp Rogers and Camp Darby, Georgia, 'the Mountain Phase' at Camp Merrill, near Dahlonega, Georgia, and the Florida Phase at Camp Rudder, Eglin AFB, Florida. The Desert Phase, conducted first at Fort Bliss, Texas and later at Dugway Proving Grounds, Utah was eliminated in 1995. The last Ranger School class to go through the desert phase was class 7-95.
Part of what I loved so much about Mark Bowden's Blackhawk Down was reading about how the different units perceived each other. The Delta guys considered the Rangers a bunch of amateurs (relatively speaking, of course), while the Rangers were full of bravado for being a more elite force than the "grunts" in other "lesser" battalions.

I think it's hilarious when Captain America compares the Iraqis to the VC.

And I just found out why he looks so familiar. He was in "Malcolm in the Middle" and played Francis' friend at the military school.

Oakley sunglasses: surfer sunglasses worn by just about all Marines in Iraq. Iraqis believe Oakleys give Marines X-ray powers to see through women’s clothing and are a constant source of tension.

The exchange between Ray and the writer about why they went into the ambush instead of going around was great:lol:
