Smallville -- "Apocalypse " -- 5/1/2008

Synopsis:
Spoiler:
When Clark wonders if the world would be better off if he never came to Smallville, Jor-El shows him what life would have been like if he had never existed.

Okay - Smallville's It's A Wonderful Life episode... here's hoping it is better than last weeks and as good as "Descent".

This is the Tom Welling directed episode BTW.

Come to think of it, didn't something like this already happen somewhat in the holiday episode a few seasons back? Lex and Lana were married and Clark was all stuck up Lex like or something? I know it's not the same plot, but definitely Wonderful Lifesque.

That was season 5 I think. "Lexmas" or something along those lines.

Post Crisis. Pre-Crisis was Linda Lee, then Linda Lee Danvers after she was adopted.

Lex has the best doctors in the world examine Lana.

Clark goes to the Daily Planet and googles "coma".

Loved the homage to the comics in Lex wearing "the glove" very cool.
I am glad small details like this aren't overlooked.
Great episode.

This episode made no sense. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that these writers would struggle with the alternate history genre.

Exactly.

Okay, I don't recall that reference. Why the black glove on the right hand?

Linda Danvers was certainly a nice pull by the writers.

How did Clark and Kara get back from Krypton exactly? Are we to suppose that Brainiac's maniacal laughter and Kara's "spell" means that he somehow "liquified" into her like he did before? Oh James Marsters - you never disappoint!

I keep trying to like this episode, but I have issues (more later).

Two things I don't get:

1) If the writers care enough about Superman to include fan pieces like a Linda Danvers reference, how do they manage to turn out so much else that is absolutely garbage?

2) If said garbage is produced, how are these people not fired? Honestly, if they are supposed to be the best in show I expect better. You can keep your strike. I could produce better for less!

Pretty decent episode but the thing with Alternate reality episodes is that they usually hit the reset button at the end.
Clark sure did seem to make it to Krypton very fast and they sure seemed to get home fast as well.

Spoilers for season 8

Spoiler:
No more Lex, officially. We will get...Doomsday, and a new female villian though. Not sure how I feel about Doomsday.

In comics lore....

Luthor acquires his first prized sample of kryptonite from the cyborg Metallo, who is powered by a "heart" of kryptonite rock. Fashioning a ring from the alien ore deadly to Superman, Luthor wears it as a symbol that he was untouchable, even to the man of steel. He eventually suffers from a severe cancer in the 1990s, caused by long-term radiation exposure to his kryptonite ring.[32] (Before this, kryptonite was assumed to produce a 'clean' radiation that was harmless to normal humans.) Luthor's hand requires amputation to prevent the cancer's spread, but by then it has already metastasized and his condition is terminal.

Spoiler:
As I said in the other thread, they should make the villain Darkseid if Lex is out of the picture. Doomsday is not an interesting character.

So I was watching Terminator 3 tonight (w/Rifftrax) and noticed some very similar FX shots in this week's episode of Smallville.

I may post some screenshots later, but the (T3 spoiler)
Spoiler:
nuclear launch from the farmland and blowing up of the world FX shots
are the same ones found in this episode. Makes me wonder what else the show has borrowed from the WB vault to save a few bucks.

They probably didn't have as much time as they usually do, because of the strike, to do original effects shots.

pretty good episode for a 'reset button' storyline. Interesting seeing Clark launch himself to Earth.

Also loved seeing Welling in some glasses.

I wasn't sure about that myself. Maybe Brainiac knocked 'em out. Have we ever seen Jor-El?

So is Lex old enough to be President? Or did they pass the Prez amendment in that reality?

I think I heard something about a "portal." Maybe.
