I believe that was the season opener for season 8 where dumbass sam gets talked into getting into a car with a scary guy to help find his dog and ends up getting kidnapped(Sam's Missing part 1&2). I think that's also the episode where the penthouse and maggie all of sudden look completely different.

On a side note anyone else remember the metal band that Steve Vai started with Sam as the lead singer.

In that episode, Sam wasn't kidnapped by a molester. That family had recently lost a son about Sam's age and the mother was slowly going insane, so the father took Sam as a replacement and told his wife and teenage son that Sam was a homeless orphan.

Then there was the episode about the evils of hitchhiking. Kimberly & Arnold get picked up by some loon and he tries to rape Kimberly.

Was this one of the first "very special" episodes of any show?
I remember the last season of DS had VS episodes almost every week.

I think the most terrifying thing about that statement was that you saw this on BET

Dudley and Arnold weren't even that cute...

I don't remember Different Strokes being this deep.

dick_grayson 04-22-08 10:31 AM

The episode I remember had a scene where a police hypnotist or something helped Arnold or whomever remember the name of the street where the kidnapper lived....who still had someone kidnapped. Anyone know what I'm thinking of? Is this even the same show?

I went back and manually corrected it with "Gil". My apologies, all. Good catch, Dick.

That was the episode where Arnold and Kimberly hitchhiked to get home. I don't exactly recall the circumstances but it may have involved them not having enough money for the bus/subway fair home and they had been out shopping and it was really cold.

I seem to remember a Faily Ties " special " episode where Alex's friend kills dies( I am pretty sure he commited suicide, but it has been about 20 years since I saw it), and Alex has conversations with him throughout the episode.

Jimmy James 04-22-08 10:36 PM

Isn't there also a special Family Ties where Alex uses amphetamines to study for a big test and sleeps through it?

No doubt inspired by the very special episode of MASH where Charles got hooked on amphetamines to try to perform under extreme conditions.

Punky Brewster had three of the more famous "Very Special" episodes.

The first one was Punky being offered drugs and featured an appearance by Nancy Reagan.

Then there was the one where Cherie got locked in an old fridge, the first show to speak out against the dangers of playing in old junk piles, completely contradicting the teachings of Fat Albert and the Cosby kids.

Then there was the one where Cherie's little cousin or brother or something drank some liquid plumbr and the girls learned about CPR and 911.

Xbox69 04-23-08 07:31 AM

I'm certain Nancy Reagan appeared on a "Diff'rent Strokes" episode. This was during the 'Just Say No' era. Are you sure you aren't mis-remembering it? There may have been a "Punky Brewster" drug episode but I'm not sure whether NR appeared on it. They were both NBC shows.

story 04-23-08 07:44 AM

TheKing, I think you're getting mixed up, I'm afraid. Nancy Regan most definitely was on Diff'rent Strokes because Arnold took drugs. The Cherie locked-in-the-fridge episode ("Cherie's Lifesaver") is also the CPR episode.

This thread inspired me to go to YouTube and watch the Diff'rent Strokes episode which lead me to this particular episode of Punky Brewster. That episode has always stuck with me, and watching it again for the first time in at least fifteen years, I was really struck by the kid who played Alan. I almost cried watching him cry when Cherie turns out okay in the end (sorry for the spoilers). The show is so over-acted, yet he was so genuine. Maybe it's a matter of perspective, watching that show as a little boy as opposed to an adult, but I didn't realize how young those kids were, and the actor playing Alan is just plain great.

The friend was killed in a car crash, and Alex was supposed to be with him but opted out for some selfish reason. Thus the guilt he felt.
