Maybe you could use that argument the first time he did it, but once he saw that people were eating it up and showering him with praise, it is anything *but* brave and original.

The only performance I have seen was Ramielle's. I'm sticking w/ last week's vote.

I really like Brooke, I know she is talented. I'm just saying her style is the same also. The one time she broke out of her comfort zone and took it upbeat and tried to dance it was awkward. She is great at what she does.

And that is my point with David Cook. He performs in the style in which best suits him. I'm glad he doesnt go with the karoake route with these songs. Yes, I know he does covers of covers. I never heard Chris Cornell perform that song before. So when I heard David Cook do it, I really fell in love with it. I love the way he sang it. I'm in no way giving him credit for the arrangement. All in all, he still had to sing the song in a believable way and pull it off. He did that. He may be arrogant, and you may hate his hairstyle, but he connects to me with his performances. And yes, maybe he should speak back to the judges, but it doesnt seem like it is a question answer period up there. David Archuletta just smiled and nodded when Simon said he doubted he picked that song, that it wasnt he style. I dont think you want to get into a debate in your minute on stage taking in your critiques. Brooke did it, and everyone wanted her to be quiet. Blame the judges for giving false credit, whatever.

actually he is a pop singer posing as a "rocker". god i hate that term almost as much as i despise generic watered down fake rock like daughtry spews.

It wasn't a Soundgarden version. It was a Chris Cornell solo, btw.

Regardless of the inspiration, be it from the covers or the original, what David Cook brings to the show is stage presence (totally owns the stage), and he almost always connects with the song he's singing. He's able to imbue far more emotion in his singing than almost all of the other contestants combined. He's not a silky smooth singer, he's more of a stage performer who commands your attention. His singing can take you on a short journey, which is something not many other contestants this season can do. Now that being said, would his singing sound good in studio cuts of the songs, that's for you to decide, but the way AI is set up, you definitely have to be able to perform the song you're singing, not just sing it nicely. That's the X-factor ingredient missing from many contestants who have a nice voice, but no stage presence or charisma.

I really think the judges just appreciate that he doesnt do the standard version of the song and that is what they mean by originality.

Doing Billie Jean, and not the pop MJ version is a pretty big risk IMO. He could have very easily bombed with it.

He is never going to sound good singing a standard ballad. If he did the MJ version of BJ last night it would have sucked ass.

Being a competition he needs to actually sound good. I dont understand why it is better for him to do something out of his comfort zone but badly would be good for him. All people would be saying is "See! He can't sing a Mariah song like Mariah!".

This was a similar knock on Daughtry which I never understood either.

While they may have an impact on their song choices they don't produce the show and can't guarantee that who's version of the song will be relayed to the audience.

The dude should just wear a band t-shirt every week of whatever version of the song he is doing. Smack the public in the face with the info.

EDIT: The crazy thing is a actually don't really like this guy either, but he has grown on me every week. He sounds like a pro while many others sound like they entered a HS talent show.

Actually, it would have been more of a risk for him to do Micheal's version since its sooooo not his style.

I'm not a fan of the theme weeks where they are stuck singing something they can't make their own. You don't hear Chris Cornell singing in a different manner just to be different.

Just to clarify, I'm not suggesting he do something outside of his general style. Cook should stick to modern rock the way Brooke should keep it folksy, Chikezie should keep it funky, and KLC should stick to generic half-country pop with very little clothing. What irritates me about Cook is not that he's doing "rock" performances on a "pop" show, but that the style of the arrangements for every performance except "All Right Now" has been essentially identical every week. For all the complaints people have with Daughtry, he didn't do this. He had a distinct vocal sound and stayed within his rock roots, but most of the performances brought something different to the stage as the weeks passed by. Cook hasn't contributed anything new since "Hello" a month ago, and so I'm half annoyed with him for being boring and predictable and half annoyed with the judges for wildly praising him for this glaring fault.

That's a long-winded way to call him an "emo douchebag", wouldn't you say?

This is the first episode of Idol I watched this season, and I was pretty underwhelmed. I will say that I always loved John Farnham's You're The Voice, so it was nice to see it get some mainstream recognition, but the version was pretty poor.

Why would he "say" the wrong information? Makes no sense.

David Cook's hair doesn't make any sense either, but that doesn't stop him.

Jadzia 03-26-08 02:45 PM

I had to lauh when they showed David Cook's baby picture. His head is shaped exactly the same way, and his hair now looks like one of those "baby toupees" from the SNL parody commercial.

hippie68 03-26-08 02:46 PM

I don't get all the Cook bashing on this board. Who cares if you don't like his hair, thinks he is arrogant,or is not giving credit for the songs he picks. This is a singing competition. Can the guy sing? Absolutely. I can understand if you don't like the way he sings, but whether you love him or hate him, he is gonna have a huge career when this show is over.

dadaluholla 03-26-08 02:57 PM

Hippie68, it's actually more of a popularity contest than a singing competition.

No it's not. It's an image contest. It's not called American Vocalist. Hair, arrogance, hideous flower necklines, and general douchebaggery are perfectly relevant criticisms. If this were a singing competition, Justin and Nikki wouldn't have bested Tamyra, Jasmine Trias and Kellie Pickler would have been politely escorted off the premises, and you'd never have heard the names Taylor Hicks and Blake Lewis.
