Going to start late due to the Nascar race running long.

RichC2 03-02-08 07:49 PM

ugh...

boogieman03 03-02-08 09:41 PM

Damn it nascar. Completely missed it.

Ranger 03-02-08 09:48 PM

AFAIK, NASCAR did finish the race before the air time, but FOX kept on with the post-race talk.

I missed it since I had to meet someone on a short notice and didn't record the episode.

Layziebones 03-02-08 10:31 PM

Wow! Excellent Episode. Great ending with Ralph.

CPA-ESQ. 03-03-08 08:39 AM

Dammn Nascar! I got 1/2 hour of a recap show

Way to go FOX!

Strafe 03-03-08 09:16 AM

Nope. Race ended at 8:15 PM Eastern. They had about 10 minutes of post-race and the episode started at approximately 8:27 eastern.

It was a fairly good episode, IMO. More funny moments than they've had recently, to be sure.

Chew 03-03-08 09:47 AM

I thought I should've known the voice of the new kid, but when I saw it was Topher Grace: I didn't feel too bad for not recognizing it.

Good thing I didn't have much else to watch and padded 30 minutes once I saw the race running over.

Bluelitespecial 03-03-08 10:15 AM

I am glad I taped this while I watched Big Brother, but it was a very funny epsiode. Yeah I didn't recognize the voice at first, but then it hit me it was Topher Grace.

mmconhea 03-03-08 10:31 AM

excellent episode!
Nelson: "See-Saw!"

I'm Shipping Up to Boston by Dropkick Murphys, it was used in The Departed (title music even). Pretty popular song/band in their own right.

My favorite joke came when Marge was filling up the ketchup bottle from the packets (paraphrase):

Lisa: Do you do it with relish?
Marge: No, I actually find it embarrassing.

One of my worst seen movies of last year.

The Ralph bit at the end "The rat means obviousness" or something like that was the best line - I absolutely hated that part of the movie and most of the rest of it.

Anyway, this Simpsons episode was at least 100x better than anything Scorcese has ever done (with the exception of The Aviator, which I didn't realize he did until I just checked IMDB.).

Chew 03-03-08 12:41 PM

This episode was at least 100x better than Raging Bull or Taxi Driver?!? Were you watching the Be Kind, Rewind versions?

Was hoping nobody would dignify the remark with a reply but ah well.

I didn't really like this episode. I've seen about half this season but this just stuck out as trying too hard and not really achieving anything. The last scene with Ralph and the rat just made it that much more apparent the writers don't really care anymore. Pointing out something obvious by making somebody say it's obvious just isn't particularly funny, even if it is Ralph. Where the hell was the comedy? Just fairly lame all around. Were all the real writers too busy working on the movie to write for this season?

The Simpsons has always been good at doing pop-culture reference gags, because they understand that the gag is taking the reference and putting it into a different, funny context.

A lot of people these days seem to think that just referring to something is funny, which was the central premise behind the "Family Guy" Star Wars special.

It's also nice that "The Simpsons" can make a reference without pointing to it and telling you what the reference is, and thereby sucking the life out of the joke.

There was a great gag on the nightclub tracking shot from "Goodfellas" in the episode where Bart and Nelson became best friends last year, and it was totally hilarious. But they didn't need to make 50 different "Goodfellas" references with reminders every three minutes that they were making "Goodfellas" references.

Exactly what I thought about Scorsese putting that in the scene.

And, I have never seen Raging Bull (don't care to), tried watching Taxi Driver a couple years ago, but couldn't get thru it.

IMO, this is exactly why last nights episode failed. It made references but sucked any humor from em. Also why I didn't like that FG Star Wars special.

I disagree...I think when you have to explain something, it isn't as funny. FG Star Wars was funny, but not bust a gut. However, this wasn't a typical FG episode, so they didn't have to explain all the jokes. Where as a normal FG episode...but there are still plenty of funny references.

The Goodfellas reference in last years episode, that was great. And I enjoyed last night's episode.

RichC2 03-03-08 02:22 PM

I keep typing without thinking lately, stupid brain.

I can agree with what you're saying in terms of "not funny if you have to explain it." I think I just don't like the "famous movies... as done by the Simpsons" episodes.... Save for the Eternal Moonshine episode earlier this season. But then... there really hasn't been that many to begin with, so I don't know what I'm actually complaining about.
