Private Practice -- Grey's Anatamoy spinoff -- S: Kate Walsh [MERGED]

Synopsis:

Spoiler:
Debut: In this “Grey's Anatomy” spin-off, neonatal surgeon Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) has left Seattle Grace for L.A.'s upscale Oceanside Wellness Clinic. In the opener, Addison begins work. Trouble is, her old friend Naomi Bennett (Audra McDonald), a fertility specialist, hired her without telling the other Oceanside doctors. And they don't like it. Meanwhile, a teen develops complications during labor; and a wife and a girlfriend both want a donor's sperm after his sudden death.

Whoah! That's some episode title!

I accidently had my caps lock on....Anyways, I haven't season passed this one yet. I want to give this at least 2 or 3 episodes before I do it. I do like Addison and think Kate Walsh is really attractive.

I'll give it a look. I just hope Marti "Satan" Noxon's involvement with the spinoff is limited at best.

This is kinda OT, but could someone explain about Marti Noxon? I keep seeing references to her being horrible crop up every so often, but I have no idea who she is (other than basic IMDB credit info) and why she's hated.

I can't decide whether I'm going to watch this one or not. I already have two other things scheduled to record at that time, and I wasn't really bowled over by the "pilot" last year.

I'm really surprised ABC doesn't have it scheduled to re-air Friday or Saturday.

People tend to credit her with Buffy's downfall. Season 6, the season she took the reigns from Joss Whedon, is widely considered the worst of the series.

She's alright if she's simply scripting a few episodes of a TV show, but when she's given any sort of creative control, the storylines become a mess and the characters(especially the male ones) become seriously unlikable.

I don't know how much of an influence she had over Grey's Anatomy Season 3, but what I do know is that after she was brought onboard, we were subjected to the ferry arc, the "Gizzie" subplot, the unnecessary death of Meredith's stepmom, and yet another breakup of Derek and Meredith. Plus previously likable characters like Derek and George became very unsympathetic in their behavior.

And I don't think I have to recap the damage she did in Buffy's 6th season.

As long as she is controlled, meaning that her ideas are fine-tuned by a supervising producer, she can be somewhat effective. As stated above, if she is determining overall story arcs we're in DEEP trouble here. Bottom line, if she is given free reign you might as well throw this spin-off in the same lot as "Joey".

And yes, she ruined Buffy Season 6 & should be whipped daily for it.

So is it normal to have a birthing center so freaking far away from the hospital? Seems like risky business to me.

And they usually walk around without a shirt on any chance she gets.

Sadly, Buffy fans think Joss Whedon (Buffy's creator) is infallible. So they blamed Noxon; who was named executive producer on Buffy's 6th season, on the decline of said season. The series was showing it's age and she happened to have a lot of control over the season that many fans hate. It didn't matter that she was the writer of several of the shows best episodes. Guess what? it was Whedon's property and he had final say. She's a good writer, I doubt she's Satan.

Private Practice was only ok, i'll give it a few more.

Oh please people. This show is no less "forced" than "Grey's Anatomy" and that's simply the nature of this genre so I stay stick with it.

Count me in as someone else who enjoyed season six of Buffy. It wasn't the best season of the show, but I still enjoyed it a lot.

Don't get me wrong. I loved Buffy till the end, season 6 included. But it wasn't the strongest. I just get sick of the fans who can't admit that Whedon is merely a very talented man...not the second coming.

Back to Private Practice, it really did seem forced. I'm hoping they'll tweek the formula, like the first season of Grey's.

Noxon is a good writer, but an average at best showrunner/producer. It always seemed to me that she handled the relationshipy stuff on Buffy, whereas Joss would focus more on the overall arcs/mythology. That pairing seemed to work well, but she hasn't had a good team around her for her other shows.

I think for me personally, the reason I give Noxon so much grief is that she did a pisspoor job running Buffy while Jeffrey Bell and Tim Minear were given the reigns on Angel and did a really good job.

Buffy was a bit longer in the tooth than Angel obviously by the time Joss Whedon left to focus on Firefly, but it was coming off a strong 5th season and Noxon was at least partly responsible for ruining virtually every character on the show, especially Willow.

Private Practice was fucking brutal. Every scene grated. The tile counting woman was obnoxious and her grunting made me want to kill myself. I even hated the LOOK of the show...it was so soft and looked like they were filming through frosted glass. I thought the 'test pilot' last year was 10 times better than this...I'll watch next week, but this was probably (along with Big Bang theory) the worst new show I've seen this year.

Didn't really enjoy the show either. I thought the test pilot or whatever they called the thing last year was better.

Shame to, cause I liked the Addison character on Grey's.

I may give it another chance next week, see if it gets any better.

Hey, this would be a great place for a Private Practice thread.
Topic, please.

Although having watched this show last night, I can see there really is not that much to say. I did not enjoy the pre-pilot from last season, but I still wanted to give it a chance. But this episode was really no better. The whole show still reminds me of that "Inconceivable" drama on NBC a few yearts ago and that only lasted like 2 episodes. If this show did not have the Grey's Anatomy angle, I think it would probably last as long. The GA tie-in should give the show time to find its footing, but the writers are going to need to step it up.

I am going to give it more chances, but so far I am not enjoying this.

As far as the birth center being far out from the hospital, that is common for free-standing birth centers. They would usually risk you out of those centers though if anything was risky about your pregnancy. But childbirth is usually a normal experience not really needing a hospital. That is one thing I like about the show, is the alternative medicine angle (I wish I lived near a clinic like that.)

I do find it hard to believe that someone like Addison would work there and not someone who really believed in those philosophies.

And it was really strange that Addison delivered a baby on her first day. Usually when you are pregnant you would have an OB that you are seeing throughout the pregnancy before they deliver your baby. If she was starting at the clinic, was she taking over from another OB or is she the first one at the practice? It just was seemed too scripted that she would suddenly have a birth to attend.

I like Kate Walsh a lot, I'm going to miss her on Grey's Anatomy. Aside from Amy Brenneman, I just didn't like any of the characters, especially Cooper. Taye Diggs as whoever wasn't great either. In a way, I hope this tanks and the Bionic Women kicks this off the air. Really? I don't see how this could possibly get high ratings.
