Back to You "Pilot" 09/19/07

Spoiler:
After an embarrassing personal meltdown winds up on the Internet, news anchor Chuck Darling makes a desperate stab at career rehab by returning to his old Pittsburgh station, where he and former co-anchor Kelly Carr had a matchless chemistry -- while the cameras were rolling, at least. Off-camera, Chuck was a self-centered skirtchaser and Kelly was a tightly wound know-it-all. Have they mellowed in recent years? Stressed-out news director Ryan Church certainly hopes so, since he's busy enough dealing with sports anchor Marsh McGinley's seemingly endless stream of wildly inappropriate remarks. Field reporter Gary Crezyzewski, meanwhile, just wishes they all didn't keep leaving him standing outside in the snow.

I have no idea whether this is any good or not, but I'm happy to have Kelsey Grammer back on TV. :)

Groucho 09-19-07 02:20 PM

That is NOT a flattering photo of Patricia Heaton.

This looks mildly interesting, but the reviews have been good and I love Fred Willard -- so I'll give it a shot.

aktick 09-19-07 03:06 PM

I'll watch despite Grammer.

DJariya 09-19-07 03:21 PM

I hate sitcoms, but I'll try this one out.

TheMovieman 09-19-07 03:21 PM

I'll watch because of Grammer.

:p I liked him in Cheers, couldn't stand him in Frasier. That's really my only exposure to him. Maybe I'll like him just fine in a different role.

I'll watch because the premise is interesting, the dialog (at least from the previews I've seen) is witty, and because it looks like there is decent on-screen chemistry between Grammer and Heaton, both of whom have good comedic timing.

So far this is my most anticipated new show of the season.

invisiblegt 09-19-07 07:21 PM

Well, fifteen minutes in, and I'm out.

This is one of the poorest written "comedies" in recent memories. Non-existant humor, some of the dullest dialogue I've heard, and rather talentless acting.

All in all, a perfect example of a FOX comedy...

[Side note: Makes me miss Good Morning, Miami.]

EDIT: In regards to the daughter...

Spoiler:
Well, that was a terribly conceived "twist." If I hadn't guessed it twelve seconds in, it would have still be trite.

Ayre 09-19-07 07:37 PM

They could only get two people to laugh on the laugh track.

Anubis2005X 09-19-07 07:39 PM

First of all, I'm not really used to laugh tracks anymore after The Simpsons, Arrested Development, and The Office. And if you're going to use laugh tracks, at least use it well...like in Seinfeld or something. Sounds like they used the same laugh track from Scooby Doo...

EDIT: And for the record, gave it a few minutes, thought it was pretty poor...

zebop 09-19-07 07:49 PM

Not good. Part of it looks like Frasier. I think what made Newhart initially work was the change of locales and the switch from film to videotape (it changed in season 2.)

I'm not getting a ton of chemistry between Heaton and Grammer either.

astrochimp 09-19-07 08:21 PM

I pretty much echo the sentiment here.Barely cracked a smile but i like Grammer and Heaton so i'll atleast watch it again next week.

Vipper II 09-19-07 08:33 PM

I was quite disappointed; I expected something a lot better from the likes of Christopher Lloyd. Hopefully it was just pilot struggles. Either way, I'll give it another week or two and see if things change.

thecrackedjack2 09-19-07 08:41 PM

I was disappointed as well :(

marty888 09-19-07 09:32 PM

Even with James Burrows directing, this felt stale. We've had some terrific sitcoms over the years with broadcasting as the workplace setting (<i>Mary Tyler Moore Show, WKRP in Cincinnati, News Radio, Sports Night, 30 Rock)</i> but unless there's some high-wattage improvements, this one will be lucky to last out the season.

Tracer Bullet 09-19-07 09:37 PM

I laughed a couple of times, so I'll give it a few more episodes. Pilots are often not the best judge of a show's quality, anyway.

aktick 09-19-07 09:39 PM

I didn't mind it, but I'm easily impressed. If Pushing Daisies and Kid Nation end up being better than this, I'll probably quit watching. Until then, since I've got the slot free on my DVR, I'll record it.

..and 30 Rock. The last two sitcoms I enjoyed that didn't seem to have a laugh track that was overused/canned were King of Queens and George Lopez.

I've been waiting for a decent ensemble comedy from Levitan since Just Shoot Me (Stacked was mediocre, Greg the Bunny went kaput). The first half of this new one was BAAAAD mainly due to the supporting cast (not digging the Lah-teena, the Wheeny, and the fat sweaty guy), but the second half was decent due to Grammer and Heaton, so I'll stick with this one.

bigjim25 09-19-07 10:16 PM

In regards to the daughter...maybe she should've stayed on Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader 'til something better came along. I guess her parents are not for letting her do this show. ;)

riley_dude 09-19-07 10:22 PM

Just the idea of them both acting all coy every week will keep me far away.

Never saw her on Fifth Grader, but she's shown some comic talent with her guest turn on The Sarah Silverman Show ("Not Without My Daughter" ).

Quake1028 09-19-07 10:30 PM

Wow, that was pretty bleh. I give everything a few chances, because I know most pilots suck, but this one is on a short leash.
