Monk has slipped so much, its difficult for me to imagine that it has a higher viewership tha Veronica Mars.

V Mars was on network TV, and Monk is not. Add in the time slot differences, and it is like comparing apples and oranges.

Because: "V Mars was on network TV, and Monk is not. Add in the time slot differences, and it is like comparing apples and oranges."

What does quality have to do with number of viewers anyway? More people watched According to Jim than Arrested Development, for instance.

As others have mentioned, being on cable and being in a different time slot makes it a waste of time to try to draw any conclusions from viewership. To answer the question though: Yes, Monk is drawing more viewers than Veronica Mars did.

So why do shows go to network tv instead of cable channels ? Does network tv give more money/bigger budgets ?
It seems shows have to do really well to be kept on network channels.

So if its a smart show, its very dicey to go there.

It depends on the show. For instance, a smart show like Damages could not go on network TV (they'd have to cut out the language which, IMO, would make the show lose its edge). I'd assume network TV costs more and the pressure to succeed is also higher.

But as someone said, this is apples to oranges. For instance, the top rated cable show (for week of 7/16) was The Closer which got 6.84m viewers; Monk got 4.87m. Those numbers would be poor on network TV but given that cable channels aren't as widely available as network TV, that's pretty good.

This season, though, NBC moved "Law & Order: CI" to USA and I know during the summer, ABC picked up second airings of "Greek" from ABC Family.

As am I. VM was a great show, and Monk is one of the most atrocious shows I've ever seen.

Monk used to be a good show. The first 3 seasons were good. Then they ran out of ideas.
