Y: The Last Man (Hulu) — premieres 9/13/21
New Line lines up donors for 'Y' adaptation
By Borys Kit July 24, 2007 D.J. Caruso and Carl Ellsworth, the team behind the hit thriller "Disturbia," are reteaming for "Y: The Last Man," New Line Cinema's adaptation of the acclaimed Vertigo comic book. J.C. Spink, Chris Bender and David Goyer are producing. Caruso is developing and directing, with Ellsworth on board to write. The comic, created by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, centers on Yorick, an escape artist who is the last survivor of a mysterious plague that has killed every single male mammal in the world. With his male pet monkey, he sets out to find what might have wiped out the world's male chromosomes. Mason Novick is exec producing. Caruso and Ellsworth became hot properties with "Disturbia," the teen-skewing "Rear Window"-like thriller made for $20 million that has grossed about $80 million. Caruso, who also directed "The Salton Sea" and "Two for the Money," is repped by CAA and attorney John LaViolette. Ellsworth began his Hollywood career working on Joss Whedon's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and then going on to "Cleopatra 2525," on which he worked with Sam Raimi. He entered the feature world with the DreamWorks hit "Red Eye," on which he first teamed with producers Spink, Bender and Novick. Ellsworth is repped by ICM and Shuman Co. and attorney Karl Austen. |
I love 'Y', but haven't seen any of the movies referenced in the article so I can't tell if this is good news or bad. Like with anything else I like that gets the big screen treatment, I just hope its good. Its a great premise and I love the way its written. Hopefully they can do right by it.

They already screwed up the premise. Yorick doesn't give a crap about finding out what happened to all the males. He just wants to be reunited with his girlfriend on the other side of the world.
|
Wish they would have just got Vaughn to write it...

Okay, spoiler regarding the cause for people who haven't read the book:

Looks like Shia's Out
"I’m not willing to make that movie currently, and may be too old to play the role by the time it does come around." |
Re: Y: The Last Man - news, rumors, castings
I'd be okay with any of those choices. Anything is better than Shia.

9:38 AM PDT 9/26/2014 by Graeme McMillan The movie version of Brian K. Vaughan’s Y: The Last Man is officially dead, the director of the project has confirmed to /Film. After years of development, multiple scripts and two directors, rights to the property have reverted back to Vaughan and his co-creator on the series, Pia Guerra. Dan Trachtenberg, who boarded the project in March 2013, told /Film that the rights had reverted back to Vaughan and Guerra “quite a few months ago.” He teased the movie version fans will never get a chance to see, saying that he hoped to “[bring] to the BIG screen what we’ve been getting in TV so readily now — great characters, RELATIONSHIPS, world building and genre re-combination. … I was excited to make an ADVENTURE movie, with swashbuckle, that was fun and funny but had something to say.” The movie would have adapted the first 10 issues of the 60-issue series, he went on to say. “We wanted to tell a complete story … but not the whole story,” he explained, adding that he hoped that “in success, we could get tell the rest of our serialized adventure.” Cinematic inspirations for Trachtenberg’s take on the movie included Raiders of the Lost Ark, Midnight Run and a couple of surprising additions: “Willow and Ladyhawke I may have referenced a little too often,” he joked. A movie based on the DC Entertainment/Vertigo series about a world in which the males of every species had become extinct with the exception of one man and his monkey had been in the works since 2007, when director D.J. Caruso was attached and Shia LeBeouf rumored to play the lead role of Yorick Brown. In later years, writers Stephen Scaia and Matthew Federman were brought in to create a new script. The rights reversion is hardly unexpected; back in January of this year, Vaughan himself said that he expected it to happen if the movie didn’t start production “in a few months.” The writer, who has worked on ABC’s Lost and developed CBS’ Under the Dome, is currently focusing on comics work again, with Image Comics’ Saga and the digital series The Private Eye. |
Re: Y: The Last Man - news, rumors, castings
'Y: The Last Man' TV Series in the Works at FX (Exclusive) Comic creator Brian K. Vaughan is attached to develop the graphic novel. Brian K. Vaughan's beloved comic Y: The Last Man is coming to television. FX is teaming with Vaughan and Color Force's Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson to develop the dystopian sci-fi comic as an ongoing series, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. A search is under way to find a writer to develop the series with Vaughan. A director for the potential series has not yet been determined. Y: The Last Man, which is purely in development at this time, will be produced by FX and FX Productions. FX declined comment. Y: The Last Man ranks as one of the most beloved and critically acclaimed comic book series of all time. The Vertigo title was first launched in 2002 and revolves around Yorick Brown — the last surviving human with a Y chromosome — and his Capuchin monkey, Ampersand. The series follows escape artist Yorick after the mysterious plague as he sets out to find what might have wiped out the world's male chromosomes. The series, written and created by Vaughan and artist Pia Guerra, ran for 60 issues and has been collected in multiple graphic novels. The news of a Y: The Last Man TV series comes after a long waiting period as rights to the series reverted back from New Line to Vaughan after the company's plans to convert the comics to a feature film were scrapped. New Line — a corporate sibling to publisher Vertigo — acquired the film rights to the series in 2007 and set David Goyer, Carl Ellsworth and director D.J. Caruso to adapt. The latter wound up walking away from the project after New Line didn't want to produce the saga as a three-film franchise but rather a two-hour stand-alone feature. In March 2012, Jericho's Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia were in final negotiations to take on the property with J.C. Spink, Chris Bender and David Goyer producing and Mason Novick and Jake Weiner set as executive producers. The latter fell apart in September 2014 when Vaughan announced that the rights were in the process of reverting back to him and the movie was dead. "We wanted to tell a complete story … but not the whole story," Vaughan said at the time, noting that he had hoped that "in success, we could get tell the rest of our serialized adventure." Y: The Last Man counts fans in Joss Whedon, French film director Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk, Clash of the Titans and Now You See Me) as well as Chuck alum Zachary Levi, who expressed interest in taking on the role of Yorick — going so far as to have his character on the former NBC comedy read the graphic novel in an episode. Quizzed by THR in September 2014 ahead of the fall comic book invasion on broadcast, Y: The Last Man was singled out as a property that should be the next to come to the small screen. A Y: The Last Man series at FX would mark Vaughan's return to television following CBS' Under the Dome (which he developed for Showtime and ultimately departed following its freshman season on CBS) and Lost. He's currently writing Image Comics' critical hit Saga. For Jacobson and Simpson, meanwhile, Y: The Last Man extends the duo's relationship with FX, where the company is under an overall deal with its in-house production arm FXP. The duo, whose credits include The Hunger Games franchise, are currently teaming with Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk on FX anthology American Crime Story. Should Y: The Last Man go to series, it would give FX perhaps the crown jewel of comic books and put the cable network on the map with fanboys. AMC has ratings juggernaut The Walking Dead and its companion, Fear the Walking Dead as well as controversial take Preacher due next year; ABC has Marvel's Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter; The CW has Arrow, Flash and Legends of Tomorrow; CBS has Supergirl; Fox has Gotham, the upcoming Lucifer and is developing X-Men; while Sony's PlayStation has Powers, which was developed multiple times at FX. Syfy, meanwhile, is developing Superman prequel Krypton from Goyer and TNT has Titans, among others in the works. Vaughan is repped by Verve and Ziffren Brittenham. |
Re: Y: The Last Man - news, rumors, castings
Time to move this over to TV Talk! A TV series makes much more sense, would love to see it.

So happy!
And I totally lost my shit at the end. That's one of the only times I've cried reading a comic book. |
re: Y: The Last Man (Hulu) — premieres 9/13/21
I love the comic series so I'm hoping that they do justice to it.

re: Y: The Last Man (Hulu) — premieres 9/13/21
I'm glad this is a TV series, as it should have been from the get go. There are too many subplots and the story is too big to be told in a movie or a series of movies. The book fits perfectly for a TV show and I'm glad a network like FX got it.

Fwiw, the collections are on sale at Comixology this week.

re: Y: The Last Man (Hulu) — premieres 9/13/21
Yep, this would play better as a series than a movie.

Finally getting some Vaughan adaptations.

re: Y: The Last Man (Hulu) — premieres 9/13/21
I know I'm a month late, but I was talking to a co-worker about this today and did a search to see what was up with the property...I couldn't be happier they switched from a film to TV; so much more time to develop the story.

I read the first couple dozen issues of this back in the day, but then I got out of comics for a while. This inspires to me to go back and read the whole thing.

re: Y: The Last Man (Hulu) — premieres 9/13/21
Kurt Sutter is free now, I always thought the comic could use more Katy Sagal songs.
