Well, I've been away for the last month on vacation and recorded these episodes and was finally able to watch the last 4 episodes today.

I remember in the first couple of threads that a lot of people didn't like this show, but I knew if they gave it a chance, it would at least be an interesting show that would make them think.

It seems that everyone posting in this thread either doesn't get it, but likes the show or doesn't get it, but thinks they like the show. :lol:

Hopefully the ratings are decent and the storylines continue to be different than anything we've ever seen, so that HBO will give this show at least 3 seasons.

And it's nice to see a show about Christianity that makes you think, in a weird way! ;)

Very true...funny how the 2 dramas on HBO now are both heavily influenced by religion. Don't see that on network television, do you? Lost a little, any others?

Butchie's multiple rants about his babies moma "sucking a ******s cock" really seemed like terrible writing to me. And I'm the last person on this Earth that would be offended. It just didn't feel authentic or like anyone would ever even keep repeating themselves like that.

Umm, I guess you don't know anyone who's girlfriend went into porn. It seemed genuine to me. Butchie was hurt and allowed his racist side out instead of attacking his son's mother more viciously.

And I don't necessarily think the show is about Christianity. It's about a deity/person with superhuman powers, and some references are made to the bible, but I don't think it is a Christian show whatsoever.

I agree...I said I thought it was influenced by religion, which it clearly is.

But what other current, credible religion speaks about a 'Father'?

There's no reason he couldn't just say "Oh, you're off to suck some guy's cock for money!" Whores are whores, is it better if the mother of his child was only making sexy time for money with white dudes?

Exactly. That's just a ridiculous justification and the scene is still cringeworthy. And not because it's offensive, but just because it was terribly done.

I still like this show but, that really did offend me. It's a perfect example of why I hate it when people try to say that racism is over when someone says the n-word for no reason.

I also have to agree that the 'N' word and the 'towelheads' reference seem just a ploy to pander to the audience that gets off on those kinds of generalizations.

Not to threadcrap, but I'm one of those who hated the first 2 episodes & tuned out and STILL don't like the show. Just caught the 5th Day episode when it came on after Big Love or Entourage & left it on while rearranging the DVD shelves. Thought I'd give it another chance but came away thinking "What a bunch of pretentious crap." I like David Lynch, but this stuff makes me think of my reaction to "Lost Highway" (that the title should have been "Lost Time That I'll Never Get Back").

Just to say that not everyone who originally dislike the show has come around to "think that they like it". As far as the "hidden meanings", I think that's giving the show way too much credit. Deliberately writing a "weird" show is evidently a lot harder than it looks...in the same way that deliberately trying to be funny is hard for most people. Milch should have given us the 6-episode final season of Deadwood that HBO was willing to front & let this idea percolate for a while, IMHO. I guess I'm missing something here, what with all the people guessing the meaning of John's "parables" and wondering which disciple each person represents. Maybe Al Swearengen will show up as Judas, Satan, or go against typecasting and play Gabriel.

Since so many former Milch characters have shown up in the 3 episodes I've seen, I would expect the N-Word General to appear. He always seemed out of place on Deadwood anyway (seemed as though he would have been more at home on The Wire considering his somewhat present-day speech patterns...unlike the smithy, who was perfectly cast).

As far as JIC goes, to each his own. Who knows...maybe it'll be a monster hit.

I actually liked most of the episodes, but this was just too odd for me. It took a long time for me to finally watch this one, and now that I did, I am considering not bothering with the new episode.

My main problem is the dialog. It worked for Deadwood, but here it is just annoying.

I don't think the word needs to be said at all, but on The Wire, it is in context of their surroundings.

If your not black you may never understand it but, there is big difference in the way it makes you feel from when a black person says it and when a white person says it.

I'm guessing it's the same as "white trash" kind of? White people call white people white trash all the time, but if I heard a black guy call a white guy white trash, I'd figure he meant it in a derogatory manner. I wouldn't get all bent out of shape and throw a hissy fit and call him a racist...I'd just take it as a "asshole" or "jackass" or "fucking moron." :p
