You're right. I had to look him up on google images, but damn. He was one of the leading TV character actors for a generation or two.

Mark Evanier blogs about Mr. Lane from time to time. Here's his post of today, which includes links to some of his prior posts on Mr. Lane.

I looked him up on IMDB and I still have no who he is. Incredible that his career spanned 8 decades though!

RIP Homer. Your face was all over my childhood TV screen, and you always brought your A game to every character role.

Jeez, that guy was still alive?!?

He was in dozens of things. My favorite is when he played Don Adams' uncle in Get Smart, and kept setting off all of the booby traps in Smart's apartment.

Married for over 70 years too.

Wow, at the age of 1 he survived the San Francisco earthquake!

I've generally considered Lillian Gish to be the performer with the longest screen career (first movie in 1912 and last movie in 1987 = 75 years)

Lane's first movie was in 1931 and last was as a narrator in 2006 = 75 years

Yet even though he was immediately recognizable to me, I didn't know his name until yesterday.

I did not know who he was either, he made it to 102 and had a long career and probably a good life.

RIP Mr. Lane.

Wow, I can't believe he was still alive. I remember him as being old in several I Love Lucy episodes.

A fond farewell Mr. Lane, you reminded me of my grandfather every time you were on screen.

I remember him in at least three roles on I Love Lucy.

the man with 9 kids waiting for his 10th when Lucy was going to have a baby
the man who was the Ricardo's money manager when Lucy started buying groceries for all her friends
the man in the passport office "This is a civil servants job, you want to get me fired, you'll have to wait til I die."

Ha! He outlived all the cast of I Love Lucy.

My personal favorite of his roles was as the lawyer who questioned Luther Heggs during the trial in The Ghost and Mr Chicken.

Rest in peace, Charles. You made us laugh.

That's freakin' crazy. I'd always assumed that he died in the early 70's, just based on his age. Good for you, Chuck!

I remember him being very funny as a straight-man in a Get Smart episode. Totally made Don Adams look like an idiot.

Just watched "Staten Island Ferry" over the weekend and he looked like he was in his sixties! 50+ years ago.

Yeah, he was one of those actors who seemed to have ALWAYS been old. No matter what show I ever saw him in, he was always playing an old man.

R.I.P. Charles!

Unless you're well over the half-century mark, Charles Lane was ALWAYS old! He was also one of those movie-TV fixtures that we take for granted because they were always there.
