The problem when you go with a smaller threat, is that people might not care. All really personal angles have already been used (Bauer's family/friends in danger).

I can't think of anything original for 24.

I believe they had only thought of doing it for a year or two but...it was sucessful so they have kept cranking it out and making tons of money but the audience is getting tired of the same ol' thing.
Get rid of all the cliche plot devices and try something different

Jack Vs. Alien invaders. That is all.......for now.

Or Jack vs. Zombies. :) That is all.

Turn the show, all creative control, over to a proven genius at running a show while writing it for at least one season...Joss Whedon, Ron Moore, Judd Apatow or David Milch. Then there will be so much creative juice pumped into the show that they could continue it until freaking 2020.

You know I kind of agree with this. I think Howard Gordon, despite all the good episodes he's written, is probably burnt out doing the show. I think hiring a new and maybe younger showrunner/head writer could make a difference.

That's a pretty good idea, kinda like the Bond series.

Someone on the Television without Pity Site claims to have the season premiere script and gave alot of detailed information. I don't know if it's legit or not. I skimmed through it, but here are some small details.

Spoiler:
Season 7 takes place in Washington DC
There is indeed no CTU
Esai Morales has been casted as a series regular
Jack in now working as a Defense Contractor
Pretty much most of Season 7 will be shot in California, but a 2nd Unit crew will shoot alot of exteriors in DC.
