Ive been paying so much like a few hundred for many years.

The thought of 65 bucks a month and not having the dish is very appetizing

A box? But you still need internet to access it. Why on earth would you subscribe to DTV for that if there are various services (Sling, YT, Fubo) that give you the same thing through a Roku, Apple TV, Firestick, etc.

Do they charge a rental fee on the box?

I had that when my elderly mother was living with us for a year. I only got it for 2 reasons:
- Primary reason: It had a more traditional remote where she could punch in the numbers to get to a channel. She has a lot of trouble scrolling through menus to find stuff.
- Secondary reason: The service had Reds games.

It was a 1 time fee for the box, somewhere around $80. I canceled it as soon as she moved into an assisted living place.

For some, it may be access to RSNs. For others it may be quantity of channels offered. Most steaming services are missing a few things, which could be a deal breaker.

Re: DirecTV -- News and Updates

The main reason to go with Direct TV Stream is for the Regional Sports Networks, in my case NESN for Red Sox and Bruins games. They also carry PBS which Fubo doesn't.

You can use Roku, Firestick, or Apple TV but the Direct TV box or Osprey as its called gives you a remote with numbers that is closer to the cable experience. I went with their refurbed box for a one time cost of $50 bought through the site which arrived as if brand new and has worked flawlessly for the past year.

Re: DirecTV -- News and Updates

Maybe this is widely known, I don't know, I haven't kept up with this thread. I turned the TV on during a winter storm last week and I got a prompt like "having trouble with satellite connection, would you like to use your broadband connection". Clicked Yes, and everything worked as normal. If I changed the channel, it buffered for a moment before coming up, but otherwise everything was fine. I thought it was great that they have a workaround to the "rain fade" issue.

Yeah that has been a feature for a while. Basically using DTV Stream through your set top box.

Re: DirecTV -- News and Updates

Why doesn't DirecTV offer it's customers their streaming service for free with Roku/Amazon Fire.etc?

I don't think DTV Stream has the same contracts as DTV so this might not be possible to have your same channels as DTV at the current time.

I also have Spectrum cable and I can get everything also with their streaming service for free.

Why would they give you something free that you aren't paying for?

Probably because then I'd work a deal with my buddy who still has DTV - split the bill with him, he uses the dish, I use the streaming.
