Whoah!! Viva Laughlin lost over 35% of Without a Trace's audience and almost 12M viewers from it's lead in (CSI). Can you say DOA?

Jeremy517 10-19-07 02:03 PM

So at what point are those numbers taken, or is it maybe an average of multiple numbers taken throughout the show? In other words, did Viva Laughlin lose those viewers before the show even started, or does it not count people who changed the channel after 15 minutes?

twikoff 10-19-07 02:49 PM

how were the ratings last year for earl?
this prison storyline isnt all that intrigueing

The ratings for episode four of last season weren't posted in the old thread, but for week five, Earl had 8.70m viewers.

I'm not sure if it's 15 or 30 minute right now, but the way it has been in the past is every 30 minutes. They check at the beginning of the show, and again at the 30 minute mark, ensuring each viewer had it on the channel for at least xx number of minutes, and then again at the end of the show. Most of the report you'll read will make comments like "Lost/Gained xx viewers at xx:30".

According to my data (final figures w/e):

9-24-06 : 8.38
10-1-06 : 8.12
10-8-06 : 9.89
10-15-06: 9.84
10-22-06: 8.56 (week 5).

And viewership between 1/07/07 & 2/25/07 was between 8.71 & 10.68 million per episode. After that it never went over 8 million.

And so far this year

8.66
7.98
7.76
7.26 (preliminary)

So, viewership is down by more than 2 million from it's peak last season. It looks like people are getting pretty tired of Earl. I thought the first season was really good, but then it kind of got repetitive. I still watch it and it's had some good parts this year, but it's no longer the highest viewership for NBC's Thursday night comedies (The Office).

I'm not sure where all the viewers went because the other programs at that time seem to be tracking around the same.

Those numbers for Supernatural are pathetic. Without checking last year numbers, I say that they are down from last year.

Actually, looking at the last 4 weeks or so of last season they were averaging the upper 2 millions to lower 3 millions and this year they seem to be doing the same. They average about 2 million less than Smallville.

I just got this e-mail regarding them only printing the partial weekly listings.

Dear Chris,

Your note was forwarded to the readers' representative office. Thank you for writing with your interest in seeing the complete list of the the TV rankings in The Times.

The editors in Calendar didn't have the space to accommodate the full list this week but expect that most often a full listing will be published in the paper.

I appreciated having your note so that I could make them aware that you want and expect a full listing.

Kent Zelas
Asst. Readers' Rep.
It's good to know that my bitching is being heard. But that still doesn't explain why these figures are no longer on their website. There are no space limitations on there! ;)

I don’t know what’s with all the hate for Earl as of late but I’m enjoy the third season thus far just as much as the previous two and I think it’s awesome that the writers are willing to take the show in a completely different direction. I mean, do you really wan’t to have the formulaic ‘Earl Cross’s 1 item a week of his list’ every episode again? If you want repetition, watch CSI: Miami.

It is sad that 30 Rock loses a million viewers from Earl. As much as I like Earl, 30 Rock is the far superior comedy. I don’t watch The Office but I wonder if Scrubs is going to get some of it’s viewers next week, or will The Office still get around 8 million & Scrubs will see around 5 million again. A 3 million drop-off will be huge.

I wonder what’s up with the ratings boost for ER? It was an alright episode but considering how poor it did last week; what’s with the jump up. Probably the Without a Trace viewers had nothing to watch after they couldn’t stand watching Viva Laughlin.

I posted the Final Nationals in the post before this but I wanted to know if there was an interest in that or if the Fast Nationals are fine. If there's interest, I don't mind doing it but I will just edit that night's fast nationals and replace it with the final nationals to keep the thread length down a bit.

DJariya 10-20-07 01:34 PM

Wow! The ratings for The Next Great American Band were so bad they didn't even appear on Friday's List. Getting beat by Friday Night Smackdown is fucking embarrassing. Nigel Lythgoe, Ken Warrick and Simon Fuller are probably dumbfounded right now after seeing those shitty numbers or lack there of.

critterdvd 10-20-07 03:09 PM

Wow... something needs to be done about MEN IN TREES... I love that show too much for it to crash and burn!

FOX routinely gets beaten by Smackdown. I really didn't expect much for Band on a Friday. I imagine the target audience for that show is out on Friday nights and not watching TV. I think it would've done better if it was on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday (they'd never put it on Sunday or Monday).

Shhh… don’t say anything, don’t give FOX any ideas about moving the show. Let at least one reality show go away.

Sad numbers for Men In Trees. I like both Las Vegas and Men In Trees, so I'm sad they are on at the same time. I watch them both (record) but one will most likely go.

DRG 10-21-07 03:47 PM

That makes me curious what would happen if a hugely successful established show was moved to Friday. Would it completely crash and burn, or would the audience make that extra effort? Like if American Idol was moved to Friday... I wonder how much of a hit it would take.

It would probably lose about 10 million. As you know, Friday nights are a night to go out, especially for younger people. That is why most of the shows on Friday nights skew to older people.

Of course in the 90's, ABC had a pretty good Friday nights, but that was geared mostly towards kids.

The X Files didn't flourish in the ratings until it moved to moved to Sundays.

I imagine so, although with DVRs becoming more and more prevalent I'm surprised it still matters. I was reading an article about how when DVR ratings to be factored in, certain shows gain millions of viewers who watch it at a later date, from just the overnight ratings which are usually reported. It makes me wonder if the percentage increase from the added DVR viewers would be significantly more for Friday shows, or if people just aren't bothering with the Friday lineups altogether.

mrpayroll 10-23-07 04:08 PM

Wow, ABC really has a hit with Samantha Who?

Week 1: 14.92M
Week 2: 14.35M

They were smart to program it after DWTS.
