Quick Question About William Devane on "24"

So I fell behind on 24 and just took the last few episodes off the TIVO. I remember pretty well that last year, on day 5, Secretary Heller drove his car off a cliff and drowned. I know it wasn't actually shown, but it was pretty clear that he couldn't have survived. This season he's back and he's mean and yet there's no explanation -- in fact Jack is outraged that Heller didn't try harder to rescue him from China. Did I miss something or is my memory playing tricks on me?

Sorry if this was covered in a previous thread but I couldn't read through all those threads to find if this was asked previously (and I'm sure it was if I'm remembering right).

Thanks.

There was a quick mention later in season 5 that he surprisingly survived the car crash.

Yep, the last we heard about him late in Season 5 was that he was in the ICU at some hospital. Remember, if you don't actually see the corpse on 24, the person's likely still alive.:)

Thanks. I don't remember that, but it makes sense as far as why there was no explanation given this year.

And you're right Doughboy; I thoroughly expect Phillip Bauer to be back next season even though it's completely impossible.

Also another question from the finale : how is it that neither the US or the Russians saw a helicopter land on that oil platform and then take off prior to the missile strike? I was expecting that to be a point of contention with the Russians but somehow they missed it.

Or did he?

Don't be surprised if next season he peels off a rubber mask to reveal that he is, in fact, Victor Drezen from season 1 - or maybe even Behrooz!

I also want to know how it took a fighter 20mins to cover the 6miles was it to the platform? Not to mention wouldn't it have been easier (and create more jepordy since a fight could be recalled) to have just launch a couple of cruise missiles? Lots of goofiness in this last season -ohbfrank-
