There's a lot of possibilities:

He buried the details of that girl's drug problems for her father. That certainly bought him a favor or two.

He could get on the good side of the new strike team commander (doubtful that this would be enough, though, as the new guy doesn't have any pull).

He could do something very public and very heroic and make it hard for the city to justify getting rid of him.

He could find copies of the Aceveda blowjob and blackmail David into helping him out. Or if Assinvader's buddy really is the one that turned the info on Hernan over to the Salvadorans and Vic finds that out, that's more prime blackmail material.

Please note: I have not seen the remaining episodes, and I have not read any spoilers. If one (or more) of my guesses is correct, don't spoil it for everyone by screaming that I'm revealing what will happen. This is all guesswork. I don't even watch the previews for the following week's show.
