DirecTV Ads: Love em' or Hate em'?

What do you all think of these ads where it appears you're watching a scene from an old movie, but really they had taken an actor in 2007, dressed him up like he was in the old movie, and attempted to bring the scene to life again, but by pitching DTV as well.

Do you like them and find them clever, or are they annoying and lame?

Very clever marketing. They take well know actors/movies and make commercials out of them.

TV FROM OUTERSPACE!

They aren't that bad. I thought the "Karate Kid" one was funny.

"you've seen this movie so many times you qualify for a blackbelt" or something like that.

Oops--voted before reading. I haven't seen those ads and don't have DTV anymore. The ads I HATED were the ones tooting up TV for children--the teacher who "knows good programming blah blah blah."

I let my kids watch tv but I don't need a cheerleader for DTV saying it's okay. Half of the problem with TV and children isn't content anyway, but how long they watch it.

My favorite one so far. I also like the Back to the Future one - another great movie.

I still wonder how they've done some of them (like the Ben Stein one). I guess they just have the actor do the lines and use old footage and manipulate it?

Anyway, I like these commercials...

I could take or leave them. They're not annoying, but they're not my idea of great marketing work. The techniques they're using must be pretty innovative, but they're mostly just banking on fond memories for recent classic film.

Here are two of them on YouTube:

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/voILEz4iD_8"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/voILEz4iD_8" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tQwaq72tVyo"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tQwaq72tVyo" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

And this next one isn't really the same thing, but I just found it and I think it's totally awesome:

The funny thing in the Charlie Sheen one is in the new footage he is pitching to a lefty and when they cut to the movie footage the batter is a righty.

I found them to be odd because make-up was applied to the actors faces (Shatner and Lloyd) to make them look younger, when we are so used to seeing the opposite. Charlie Sheen's head was digitally placed on the player's body. Guess he isn't as thin now as he was in that film!

The just-a-bit-outside pitch was his first MLB pitch in the movie. The guy he plunks was after he walked the first 3 guys on 12 pitches and gave up the grand salami to Clew Haywood.

Yes, I'm a Major League nerd.

I was actually wondering if perhaps the image hasn't been produced completely in CGI as Sheen looks pretty damn young. If that is a present day Sheen wearing some sort of makeup, that's pretty remarkable.

It was a few years ago, along with the "Airplane!" one.

That makes sense, if true. I wondered how they got Charlie to be that thin again.

Where is the "meh" option? I mean I have to either adore or loath them?

That's Chad, not Darth.
