Tom Selleck in Talks to Join 'Las Vegas'

Found this on ComingSoon.net (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/tvnews.php?id=19828):

Selleck is Las Vegas' New Leading Man
Source: The Hollywood Reporter April 11, 2007

Emmy winner Tom Selleck ("Friends," "Magnum P.I.") is in discussions to join NBC's "Las Vegas" as the fast-paced drama's new leading man.

He would play the smart, powerful, fun-loving new owner of Montecito Resort & Casino, a new character designed to fill the void left by the recent departure of the show's star James Caan.

Caan, who played the head of the casino's surveillance team for four years, recently left the series to return to features.

"Vegas," from NBC Universal TV Studio and DreamWorks TV, was picked up for a fifth season in February and is slated to begin production on its order soon. The show also is looking to add a beautiful female concierge in the wake of the departure of co-star Nikki Cox.

Josh Duhamel also stars on "Vegas," with Molly Sims, James Lesure and Vanessa Marcil rounding out the cast.

I think he's a good TV actor and would bring that screen presence that would be lacking with Caan gone. Not the same kind of presence and different, but I think he would add something to the show...

Get Robert Forester.

TheMovieman 04-11-07 01:44 AM

I like Forester, but I think he's only good for guest spots (maybe as a mob boss of some sort). I don't know if I'd want to see him every week...

I'll miss James Caan but Tom Selleck is a good actor and hell if the guy from Magnum P.I. & three men and a baby is on it its sure to attract a audience. It's hard for me to say who the bigger star is, James Caan in my opinion is sort of underrated.

If Craig T. Nelson wasn't getting on in age id say him, i still miss 'Coach'.

they should get Jerry Van Dyke! he's fricken hilarious!

Sadly 'Raines' isn't doing well in the ratings and if NBC decides not to order a second season (i hope they do renew Raines through) they should get Jeff Goldbulm, no joke i think he would fit in.

I know alot of ladies love Tom Selleck even though he's in his 60's. I think he would be a great addition to the show.

As long as they didn't force him down our throats, I'd be fine with him taking over for Ed.

Red Dog 04-11-07 07:58 AM

This could work.

I just wonder how they are going to recover from that trainwreck of a finale.

stingermck 04-11-07 08:33 AM

I dig it, as long as Selleck has a sweet mustache.

I agree. He can be a badass enough to where he'll replace the presence that Caan had.

Selleck is the man, and I could see this working very nicely, especially playing a fun-loving guy. Throw him in a Hawaiian shirt 24/7, and it will work.

this is the best news of the day. I love Tom Selleck.

Shannon Nutt 04-11-07 11:45 AM

Well this might interest NBC: I've never watched LAS VEGAS, but I would if Selleck joined the cast. I'm guessing there are a lot out there like me.

Selleck is an underrated actor...remember folks, he was almost Indiana Jones. :)

movieking 04-11-07 11:55 AM

He did Monica Gellar!

B.A. 04-11-07 12:39 PM

Works for me.

majorjoe23 04-11-07 12:43 PM

I heard Harrison Ford will be replacing Selleck.

GoldenJCJ 04-11-07 01:24 PM

I guess he didn't get that role in the upcoming Indy 4, huh?

I'm with Shannon Nutt, I never watched Las Vegas before, but I'd definitely tune in is Selleck starred.

Look, I ain't sayin'... but I'm just sayin'...

Tom Selleck is just a slightly more famous version of THIS guy:

Are you saying Selleck is a show killer like McGinley has been?

GoldenJCJ 04-11-07 06:54 PM

^^ Exactly. Look at Friends for example he appeared on the show in 1996, 8 years later? Show over! Need I say more? :)

Las Vegas has almost certainly already jumped the shark. I can't imagine it will ever be as good as S1 was.

TheMovieman 04-11-07 08:21 PM

^ That's what I meant. It's not like it's been a classy show or anything with top of the line stories or anything... I've enjoyed the show but it wasn't something I absolutely had to see every week. But that last season finale was pretty bad.

I think while they're getting Selleck, how about getting some new writers in there. Hell, I think after this season, they should get some of the writers working on '24' because it would be an improvement over some of the storylines I've seen lately.

zebop 04-11-07 08:55 PM

For me, Las Vegas was always crappy to begin with. Don't mind me, I'm still pissed about NBC moving Miami Vice to 9, killing and than cancelling Homicide and axing Boomtown. They are were on Fridays and I'm still pissed. I'm over it though...

Tom Selleck has a ways to go before he reaches McGinley like proportions. McGinley has everything like Charlie Lawrence, Sports Night and Love Boat in his arsenal. Selleck has well, one failed sitcom nearly 10 years ago...
