"Dirty Hands"
Spoiler:
Chief Tyrol's labor leader persuades him to defy Adama and become the rallying point for a strike.

MadMark 02-25-07 10:27 PM

WTF!?! I tuned in to watch Battlestar and SCI-FI is showing Norma Rae? Oh wait . . . never mind.

If you didn't expect Danny to end up getting hurt or killed on the factory ship, you must have never seen this magic box we call a television.

Well, hopefully next week won't be another filler episode. . .

:brickwl2:

wergo 02-25-07 10:33 PM

Oh....if Adama had killed Callie right after saving her last episode I would have been cheering and throwing confetti all over the room.

What a missed opportunity.

Again, not as bad as last week, but I was hoping for so much more from Espenson. It wasn't as preachy as it could have been, but it was still pretty annoying and just too predictable. It's still not too late for the season to end as great as it started, and I haven't entirely lost hope.

Shazam 02-25-07 11:10 PM

Christ, this episode almost makes me want to long for "alien-of-the-week" episodes.

MovieExchange 02-25-07 11:19 PM

Jaysis, will people stop hiring Jane "writer of worthless filler episodes" Espenson to work for them?

Sweet shit, her writing sucks! Here's the breakdown of how the conversation between Adama and the Chief should have gone:

Adama: You put those people back to work or I'll kill your wife

Chief: You think you're having a hard time now, old man? You don't know jack dick. Kill her or anyone else just because they're protesting the shit treatment they're getting from you and you'll see what a real mutiny is.

Ranger 02-26-07 12:14 AM

I really like Chief and Callie but I agree that some opportunities were missed. I definitely wished Chief had played hardball with Adama and staged some major riots to force his hand, at least with that, the INTENSITY would be back.

actionjackson29 02-26-07 12:31 AM

Okay so we're supposed to believe that Adama was really gonna kill Callie. When has he ever acted on his bluffs.

Heat 02-26-07 12:33 AM

Hmm... OK.

Any chance that next week there'll be a real episode?

Setzer 02-26-07 12:34 AM

Good episode but I'm beginning to wonder if the Cylons exist anymore.

Silt 02-26-07 01:15 AM

Are Chief and Helo the two main characters of the show?...cause it sure seems like that lately. Starbuck has got about 30 seconds of screen time the past 3-4 episodes. I seem to recall this show had a plot, but it's been so long since they've addressed it, I forget what that plot is. Wasn't there, like, robot thingies or something on this show? And please...no more Jane Espensen...she who penned Doublemeat Palace should never work again!

MrX 02-26-07 02:45 AM

Next weeks episode better live up to the hype to make up for the last 3 episodes.

I started doing other stuff and just had it on in the background about halfway through.

I will third the plea for no more Jane Espensen

Derrich 02-26-07 07:42 AM

BSG makes me sad now. It used to be so good...

D

A very good chance, actually.

Am I the only person on the planet who really liked DMP?

Hats with cows on 'em, ejaculating penis monsters, depressing sex in the alley by garbage bins - Galactica could use all of those right about now.

MBoyd 02-26-07 10:20 AM

I sort of liked this episode for just seeing another ship and it's function. Pretty cool set I thought.

buzzdalf 02-26-07 11:19 AM

oh man, i've been reading these threads and just letting the episodes pile up on the DVR. I haev no interest in watching the crap you all are writing about.
Is it now time for me to get caught up? Will next week be a real episode again?

Shazam 02-26-07 12:31 PM

Episodes like this have convinced me that Ron Moore has way too much leeway on this show.

I know he always bitches and moans about the "restrictions" he had writing for ST, but it definitely seems like his free reign on BSG leads him to write useless junk that I'm sure he considers vital to the story. Or something.

I don't get all the hate for this episode either. I thought it gave us a realistic glimpse of what life would really be like in this fleet. Not everyone gets to serve as an officer on the flagship. Someone's got to do the grunt work on the crappy ships. I give them credit for showing us what life's like in the dark underbelly of the fleet. I find these glimpses into the Fleet infinitely more interesting that the Shiny Happy Starfleet Society depicted in all the Star Treks. Each to their own, I suppose.

I agree that the Chief has become quite a major player of late. I'm hoping that doesn't mean they're getting ready to off him. As for the Chief and Helo being featured more than Apollo... good. At least they're interesting characters. Apollo seems like a bit of a cypher to me.

SterlingBen 02-26-07 06:49 PM

Baltar is badass, getting his book out marquis de sade style.

It wasn't "Exodus Part II", so therefore it was the worst piece of shit ever put on television, apparantly.

This provided a glimpse into some of the longstanding social problems that are coming to the surface. I can't really see how that's considered "filler". Maybe they should all be the super-competent, perfect people that inhabit the Star Trek universe.

Tommy Ceez 02-26-07 09:11 PM

First of all...if Colonial technology cant have robotic arms refine trillium, then the Cylons would have destroyed them years ago.

I have a hard time believeing that FTL drives are powered by a fuel made like cars were made 75 years ago.

Well we'll try not to hold your limitations against you as we explain. :) I'll make it as simple as possible.

An episode doesn't have to be "Exodus Part II" every time. It just has to move the story forward. That's why, despite the boxing episode being filler, it was still good filler because it moved the story. It provided explanations that the fans wanted.

Now we have the bad filler, namely this week and the Helo-centered episode from a few weeks back. These episodes have pretty much nothing to do with the storyline of the series. They have no long-lasting impact at all. They're fluff episodes that are totally meaningless. Bad filler.

Both episodes would have worked better as a backstory developing over the course of an episode or two.

Ditto. Maybe it's because I was watching a marathon of "Dirty Jobs" before watching BSG, but it was interesting to show how "the other half lived".

Maybe it's just a few of us, but this "filler" is ultimately showing the kind of life the Colonials have to keep fighting for to maintain. The societal strata is just one of things you have to wonder about in the situation.
As for "filler", it's the day in the life and getting to know the characters that makes turnkey episodes like "Exodus Part II" so strong.
However, it's to each their own. All I can say is that I severly disagree with guys like MadMark and Shazam, and I feel bad they can no longer enjoy the show.

Two possibilities:
1. It's an old refinery.
2. They disabled all automotion because, as it's been show in the show for the past three seasons, the cyclons can hack into networks and disrupt it. The previous war might have caused the Colonials to downgrade key technologies, such as refinaries.

milo bloom 02-26-07 10:15 PM

I think this felt a little more like the Galactica of old. A lot more Mary Mac on the screen, and Gaius being slimy and underhanded. I also agree it's nice to see stuff happening on the other ships, and on the lower decks. I think the line about the fleet never being commanded by someone not named Adama really hit home, both in-universe and meta-like. Does anyone not see a not too distant future with Lee Adama in command? We certainly know Tigh wouldn't last long in charge.

Strafe 02-27-07 08:03 AM

I thought this episode had real potential, this could have been a great subplot stretched over a few episodes. People born into their place in society. Baltar, traitor of New Caprica becoming the new revolutionary of the people.

It was really disappointing to see it all wrapped into a one-off.

Palaver 02-27-07 09:03 AM

I thought it was a great episode. Not only did it shed light the class problems in the fleet, it also showed that Baltar still has some pretty impressive tricks up his sleeve. I would have thought that by this point in the story his name would be mud with both Cylons and humans (neither group can really trust him.) But he keeps doing things that keeps him alive and useful to both groups.
