has anyone seen how ABC has been advertising Lost now? With critics reviews in the back ground and the announcer saying you must watch. You cant miss this episode?
Sounds a little desperate to me.

Desperate? Nah. Cheesy? Yeah. It was done in the "movie trailer" vein to capitalize/poke fun at the Oscars.

However, I think half of the disappointed expectations in this thread (and others) has to do with the promotion of the show. People should just avoid promos..

Agreed. Funny thing is, the promos driving viewers away, not drawing them in -- people get overhyped, the episode doesn't deliver to that level of hype (what show could?) and the viewers walk away.

If the promos seem desperate, that's because they are: ABC are desperate for viewers after suffering a staggering ratings slump since it's returned in a new time slot. I thought Lost would hold steady it's 16-17 million viewers from Episode 6 and keep building momentum. To quote Locke, "I was wrong."

Fok 02-26-07 01:12 AM

It's not just the promo's, but the show is becoming boring as well

DVD Josh 02-26-07 06:50 AM

I've stopped taking the promos and previews at face value. It's almost farcical now how little they represent the actual content of the episode.

I think this is the most valid criticism anyone's made for the show. The best part of Season One (for me at least) was the character's interactions with the island and the mystical aspect of the island. With the main focus being on the Others during this season, the island and its effects on the character's personalities has been sorely lacking.

I'm not attached to any of these new story lines (Julliet and Ben are the only ones that remotely interest me), and we haven't seen how Jack's absense is affecting all of the characters that I love. There were some pretty powerful stories in the first two seasons between Locke and Jack (science vs. faith) which are sorely missed.

How is Jack's absense affecting the leadership of the orignial group? Are they looking to Locke? I have a feeling that we are going to see Kate and Sawyer arrive back at camp and everything will be as if they never left.

I don't think I am looking for everything to be answered immediately, but it seems like the writers have fallen in love with "creating mystery". I think I liked the little hints that they used to drop which would progress the overall story arc a little bit at a time, but that seems sorely lacking now. All we get is more mystery and more questions with little indication that they intend to swing the story arc to a climax.

I think this is the best post in the thread, and is closest to my sentiments on the down-slide of this show. First of course, I love the show and have always defended it, but the writers have done a HUGE disservice to the fans by ignoring the other survivors for a half a season instead trying to force mystery instead of letting it come slowly. Not to mention the show has suffered because of it. The whole group dynamic has all but disappeared.

"creating mystery" - First, the writers thought it would be a good idea to hold Jack, Kate, Sawyer captive to create more of a mystery than we already had. "we will show the others basecamp and give a vague idea about what's going on but give the characters no information and of course they don't actually ask anything. Second, Ben specifically asked Michael to bring Jack, Kate & Sawyer. Why? We know why he wanted Jack but why the other two? Mine some rocks? Come on.

I agree that they should have shown how the survivors are coping without their leader, especially since the second in command, Locke, was still essentially roaming the jungle. Would have been much more interesting than watching Sawyer and Kate sitting in cages.

I'm nowhere near giving up. I don't think that will happen. I'm just frustrated because of the potential the show once had and can't seem to regain.

I haven't read through them all, but it seems like quite an extensive list

Well, to be fair Heroes still hasn't disappointed, but it is still in it's 1st season. The same could be said about the 1st season of Lost.

24 you basically have to let go of any thoughts of a lot of it making any logical sense and just go with the fun action of it. The same with Prison Break.

Neither of those 2 shows (24 & Prison Break) could really do anything to give me the negative feelings that Lost has the last season and a half. Heroes on the other hand, could take it's promising 1st season (like Lost) and totally lose sight of what it started out to do.

I guess since 24 is only based on a day, you really cannot compare it to Lost or Heroes which is set over many months.

Let's get together again in about 7 years and then we can accurately compare the two!

I think a loss of 10 million viewers in 2 season will cause some desperation. Remember, this and Desperate Housewives were the reason for the big turnaround for ABC to becoming the # 2 network in viewership. By the end of this season, it is going to be # 3 in total viewership.

And speaking of Michael (& Walt), thankfully we haven't seen them this season. I'm not sure how many (island) days it's been since they sailed off into the sunset, but I would be sorely disappointed if they just happened to reappear on the beach, especially if there have been too many weeks / months (in island time) during their absence.

For me, Lost started its downward spiral about 2/3 of the way through its 1st season. Heroes is at that point right now. It's been spinning its wheels the last few weeks, but it looks like things are gonna pick up with tonight's episode.

I swear I'm one more bad episode away from quitting on Lost. This past week was infuriating. The promos were complete BS. And I could've overlooked that if there was anything worthwhile in the episode. But the Others subplot was dull as usual. Jack and his flashback were pointless. Kate and Sawyer sat around arguing. And the rest of the Losties were AWOL yet again.

The biggest problem with Lost right now is that it's freaking boring! Even when shows like Heroes or 24 offer up a stinker(which is bound to happen in a season the length of 22-24 episodes), there's at least something positive to keep me coming back for more. And I don't just mean a promo after the episode that promises something it consistently fails to deliver on.

If they dont fix the show (IE: Answer questions!!!!!!!), next season could be its last ... its too expensive a show to have lousy ratings ...

I agree with your post and the one it is referring to...

The other thing about lost is I really like to read these threads and theories everyone has about it. BUT with my frustration with the last episode, I didn't even want to read this thread because nothing really happened and I wasn't sure I wanted to invest the time to read it. I really hope they get back to Locke and the rest of that bunch soon...

I brought this up in another LOST thread. I can't see ABC pulling the plug without a resolution, but I CAN see ABC saying - Okay, JJ, ratings suck...you get 13 episodes starting in January of 2008 to wrap everything up...we'll call it a special event mini-series.

We'll see you next week, then. and the week after.

Seriously, who was it that mentioned it earlier in the thread? we should get that list started of people who swear off the show, so we can keep track and have a little chuckle when they inevitably come back.

That would be fun. With all the people quitting each week, it's surprising that there's anyone left to talk about the show.

I've been re-watching this series with my kids. At the end of this one, my 11 year-old daughter said, "This one really sucked."

OK, this thread was a fun read. Love for Heroes, and even comparing it in a favorable light to Lost. Worries and concerns over Lost being canceled. It's funny that less than a year later Heroes would be in the toilet pretty much for good and Lost was firing on all cylinders.

That being said, this is generally considered one of the worst episodes of the series along with anything with Nikki and Paolo and of course Across The Sea.

This episode wasn't that bad, but I think many fans were getting fed up by this episode with some of the "answers" being provided. I've blanked most of what happened in the last season from my mind. The solo Richard episode is about the only thing I want to remember from it.
