I think that sort of thinking can be comforting when a show we love dies, but it's just not that accurate. The people do want AI (a show I hate) and DoND, but they also want Heroes, 24, and The Office. There is a market out there for quality television. Now, you can suggest that that market isn't looking at UPN or at Fox for a quality comedy like AD. That may be a bit more realistic. I think it's probably just more accurate to say that there is a very small window in which a show can be successfully marketed most of the time: people tend to find a show quickly or not at all. VM and AD didn't make it in that window, but LOST and My Name Is Earl did. There's just no telling how it's going to work out.
