TBS Marathon: "A Christmas Story" (8/7c starting 12/24)

My kids and I are going to watch it together tonight. They (8 and 6) have never seen it. It'll be fun to watch them watch this classic.

Merry Christmas everyone!

I remember the first time I saw this and loved it. Now, I watch it once every Christmas and wonder why in the world they show it all day.

My guess is everyone at the station has the day off, so they just put the movie in on repeat till the 8pm crew comes in on 12/25.

A Christmas Vacation marathon would be better.

I'm for a Bad Santa marathon myself so we can all learn the true meaning of Christmas.

I see your Christmas Story marathon, and raise you 24 hours of Robocop on Encore Action, for the win!

Now that, ladies and gentlemen, is how you do a trailer re-edit.

But, yeah... I basically wake up Christmas morning and turn on TBS. It's a tradition that has been going on for quite a few years now, and one I don't see ending until TBS says "enough."

(Side note: I would love to see a "Christmas Vacation" marathon on another station.)

Still a holiday favorite of mine, although I'd be lying if I said I watched it at all the last two or three years. It's a good idea, though, since it allows the option to watch it whenever you'd like and give the room to sit through at least one showing. I'd imagine it's ideal for families wanting to show people the movie for the first time.

But yeah, I'm feeling the RoboCop marathon on Encore Action. The original's one of my favorites, the second is decent and there's always something to go do when the third comes on.

Speaking of marathons, how about 17 Bond flicks on New Years?

Not really one of my favorites, but I usually catch pieces of it here and there during the marathon.

I never watch TBS on Christmas since they started the same-movie marathon of christmas story. Don't care about the movie and would very much prefer a general xmas movie marathon. At least then you could see this and others. I'm hoping they don't do the same thing again next year. Not sure how long they've been doing it though...

Mild threat crap. They have been doing it for years. You act like basic cable/satellite only has 4 channels!

So Ralphie is like 10, right? Who assigns 5th graders to read Silas Marner?!?!

The rights to the movie were sold in 1986 to Warner Bros. by MGM as part of a 50-movie package deal. In fact, MGM practically gave the movie away when it tossed A Christmas Story into the deal in order to simply meet the 50-movie quota agreed to. The cable network TNT first aired its 12 showing, 24-hour marathon as a stunt in 1988, but popular demand turned stunt into tradition. The annual marathon (now aired on TBS) starts every Christmas Eve and attracts more that 40 million people who tune in at some point to watch.

AMC had a Miracle on 34th Street marathon. They alternated between the colorized and B&W versions. I wonder if that's the start of a new tradition.

Every year I see this movie once or twice, and afterwards I wonder how I can possibly watch it again considering how many times I've seen it and how many movies I've never seen. But Christmas comes, it shows up on the cable rotations, and we pop it in again. And again. And we laugh and enjoy it just as much as any other time we've watched it.
