Well, it's not like he stood there for several minutes debating with himself over the merits vs. disadvantages to doing it, it was fairly impulsive. Plus, he might've thought he could sell the "accident" better than it appeared to us, especially since as an audience we saw actions she wouldn't have seen him do.
What I found odd was that she didn't have a camera on her cell-phone.

Well, he clearly is an impulsive guy. He did chew out a judge a few minutes later.
