The anthem bit was marginally funny only because of American Idol. So many people who think they can sing do that exact thing with their voice.

I think the Mac commercial was funnier than anything SNL has done yet.

So, 58%, 29%, and 6%?

Interesting... are the other 7% those who feel that, aside from the cold opening and the monologue, that this show has been horrible? Particularly TV Funhouse.

Edited to replace a period at the end of "horrible" with a question mark.

So what instrument do you play?

Oh I don't play an instrument. I just jump around behind the lead singer.

Beck was fantastic, and I haven't really cared about Beck since 1997.

The rest of the show was garbage.

Same here.

Huge disappointment.

Worst skit had to be the recurring Hardball with Chris Matthews.

I heard it at least twice, maybe three times tonight...wtf?

Loved the Beck puppets...clap hands!

I expect the FCC to be all over Borat's ass on Monday.

Opening - Due to NBC budget cuts Lorne Michaels sold the first 5 minutes of the show to Kazakhstan.

Borat is a little crude, but very funny.

Monologue - Hugh Laurie

Hit and miss jokes, but better than most.

Most Haunted - Hugh's ghost hunting team mistakes his fart for a paranormal event.

Horrible

TV Funhouse - Bush shows a couple repubilcan attack ads.

The cartoon and first commercial were pathentic, but Hillary-alien saved the day.

World Series' National Anthem - A contest winner (Rudolph) sings horribly

Painful, in every possible way.

Advance Man The Queen's advance man (Hugh) makes the final preparation for her arrival at a hotel.

Oh, that Queen humor...eh.

HardBall - Mathews interviews the RNC and DNC chairmen.

I think Hammond doesn't get a paycheck unless he does a Hardball.

Hugh Laurie musical number

What a surprise. A little long, but

Musical Act I

Weekend Update w/Senate canidate Tim Calhoune and 2 New Jersey gays

I'm not sure if that uncomfortable stare between the 2 jersey gays was planned or not. It was the funniest part of WU, which points me towards no.

Hospital bit Goodburger doesn't trust doctors w/Hugh as his wife.

What accent was Hugh attempting here? and how many times must they prove that goodburger can't carry a bit?

The Curse of Frankenstein Hugh leads a gullible mob mislead by a slick Frankenstein

The guy playing Frankenstein was good (I think it was the same guy who did the uncomfortable stare as a jersey gay), but not enough to save the bit.

Law firm applicant Hugh and Armisen mock applicant Poehler.

There is a reason they stuck this at the end.

Overall - C-, Hugh Laurie was pretty good, with only a couple of flubs and a good decent adlib in the horrible queen sketch. Beck and Borat gave the score a bump, but none of them could put up a real fight against the SNL written material's suckitude.

That was horrible.

The material sucked, but I wasn't impressed with Laurie at all as a host. Maybe my expectations were too high.

Borat and Beck's 2nd song were really the only brightspots.

An Editorial Note: According to Studio 60, it is inappropriate to use the word “skit” to refer to the material on a show such as this. “Skit” refers to a lower, more amateurish form of comedy while a “sketch” is more sophisticated and intelligent comedic construct. I have used the term “skit” in my past reviews without realizing that such a distinction existed. Now that I am aware of this situation, I intend to continue using the term “skit” because I feel that it is a more apt description of the state of writing on this program.

Cold Opening: I was hoping that Lorne Michaels was going to apologize for the first three episodes, but it was not to be. This was easily the best opening of the season.

Monologue: Hugh Laurie discusses how he is not like the character he plays on House and talks about what to expect from an English host. About average for a monologue these days.

Most Haunted: This may the first parody of a Travel Channel show on SNL. Great, a skit based on flatulence. The use of FLIR was creative, but it was still fairly bad in my opinion.

TV Funhouse: An animated Bush apologizes for controversial campaign ads and shows a few new ones with a Halloween theme. Not good.

World Series: A contest winner sings the national anthem and precedes to exhibit every bad trait a singer can have. Awful.

Queen’s Hotel Requests: Laurie is preparing a hotel for the arrival of the queen. Many odd preparations must be made. Not that great.

Hardball: Chris Matthews grills the RNC chair about problems with candidates including a confessed serial killer. It seemed liked this one hit the skids when Howard Dean appeared.

Protest Song: Hugh Laurie sings a protest song but mumbles the answers to serious problems. I liked it.

Beck (Song 1): What was the deal with the marionette version of the band? That was odd.

Weekend Update: I liked Tim Calhoun, but the rest was pretty bad.

Hospital: Awful.

Late Night Movie: Really awful.

Beck (Song 2): Dinner table band AND marionettes. Still very weird, but much more entertaining than the first song.

Job Interview: What the hell was that supposed to be?

Another disappointing episode. The high points for me were the opening, the protest song, and Beck’s second performance.

My Rating: D+

I liked it, best ep of the season so far.

Loved Borat
Hugh monlogue was good.
I loved the Ghost Hunters "what was that sound" SKIT, Bonus: fart on thermal camera.
Liked the Queen SKIT only because of the line, "The French have all this already."
Like Hugh's 'mmpphh' song.

Rest was crap.

Can't stand Beck, but the puppets and table banging made it interesting and non-boring.

I liked it. The skits sketches after Weekend Update were only so-so, but I thought everything before Weekend Update was great. Even the National Anthem sketch everyone else seems to hate.

Beck gave two outstanding performances. That second one was awesome -- one of the great SNL musical performances.
