I am a lifelong republican (but our current president has had me taking a good hard look at changing that) so I'll offer my take. Currently working on the 6th season so I can't comment on the 7th. Glad to read that it will be good.
If you are open-minded and agree that there are good (and bad) people on BOTH sides of the aisle you can enjoy TWW. The writing is top notch and the show can be very funny. Republicans are generally treated fairly and when an important issue comes up, both sides are presented. Is it bias? Well, yes it is but since this is a show about a Democratic administration, that's to be expected. I wouldn't expect it to be written from a republican or even a neutral perspective. This does not detract and unless you are a hard-core talk-radio listener type republican, you won't be offended.
I enjoyed S1-S4 immensely and although S5 had some awful episodes that nearly destroyed some of the characters, it recovered and actually came through with some great stuff (e.g. The Supremes, etc.) S6 is also good so far.
Sports Night - While I enjoyed the 1st season, I absolutely hated S2 to the point where I stopped watching midway through. Some of the characters changed so dramatically (for the worse) that I simply gave up on it. I can see why it did not find an audience and was cancelled. S1 was outstanding though.
