Twenty Good Years on hiatus

I didn't see this explicitly mentioned anywhere, perhaps no one cares?

(Personally, I thought the show might have had potential, but this news comes as no surprise).

http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/TV/1...eut/index.html

..."Twenty Good Years," starring John Lithgow and Jeffrey Tambor, is being pulled off the schedule after a low-rated first two weeks.

There are no immediate plans for a return of "Twenty Good Years" to the schedule. The comedy is in production on its 13-episode order and might come back in midseason.

I'm just surprised that they didn't announce it in the same press release as everything else yesterday. Maybe they'll burn the episodes off on Saturdays after they're done with Kidnapped.

I suffered through about 2/3 of the first episode, then I gave up. I expected Tambor & Lithgow to pick projects that are at least decent.

The 1st episode didn't click with me until that last 1/3, to tell you the truth, so I can understand.

As a big Lithgow fan (both on stage and on TV) this was the biggest disappointment of the new season - one of the unfunniest sitcoms I've ever seen.

I wonder why it is we can all watch a promo for a show and know it's going to be cancelled after 2 epsiodes, but TV execs can't.

On occasion, we're wrong. I was with the folks who thought that would be Ugly Betty's fate. TV can be a screwy business.

knowing the history behind Ugly Betty helps understand its success.

Look at the US version of the Office. Most here were very sceptical.

Somewhat similar situation as Ugly Betty.

On the flipside of that coin, remember the US version of Coupling?

Exactly. I knew the history of the concept quite well. I just didn't think it would play, particularly once I heard about the pilot from places like thefutoncritic.com. I still don't get it to be honest.

they also followed the British scripts for a while similar to The Office. Coupling actually had higher tv ratings then the Office but NBC was much stronger on Thursday than it is now.

As big of an Arrested Development fan as I am (and I'm a big one) I knew this would fail after watching the first commercial.

That's a great point - we DO seem to be pretty good at calling these things but at the same time if you can't edit together a 30 second promo for your 22 minute show with at least ONE funny joke, how could anyone expect it to succeed?

I knew Ugly Betty would be huge once I saw Oprah touting it a few weeks before it debuted. She also got behind Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy after those shows started, but I never saw her promote a show beforehand like that. That was ratings gold for them.

That would do it. She could literally promote somebody's bowel movement and photos of it would be the on half the nation's Christmas wish list.

I'm not surprised. The 2 episodes I saw online weren't very good.

Good riddance. I thought it was the worst pilot out of all of the new shows that I watched this fall.

Ah, I see. And agree -- seems like the announcement about 20GY was the white elephant in the room throughout that entire press release.
