Who here actually has a Nielsen Ratings Box?

Personally, I don't know a single person here in Southern California that actually owns a Nielsen Ratings Box. So, who here actually owns one? Is it a pain in the ass to use?

I never owned a box, but I participated in their 'diary' a couple years ago and I'm from Ventura...

Judging from the Studio 60 ratings, I'd assume there are probably like 3 boxes, all of them in Terre Haute.

Also is it completely on a voluntary basis or do you get paid? Same with the diary people, do you get paid?

Nielsen Ratings are a load of shit, there are cable boxes and DVRs and more advanced ways of doing it, but nope. Our shows live and die by what 26,000 households watch.

Cable/Satellite boxes and DVRs are not in every home, and there's economical and demographic bias attached to people that do own them. Thus, results taken from them would not reflect the population overall. Plus, DVRs and cable boxes are not designed to monitor viewing; I had a DVR that plain never shut off, meaning there'd be no way to say whether someone was watching the DVR or not.

The links I provided above explain how and why random sampling, like what Neilsen employs, is actually fairly accurate even with a small sample size.

Nielsen has started using DVRs though. I'm a Nielsen family through TiVo (though I'm fairly sure my numbers don't count for the overnight ratings) and I assume they just count what I actually record and not when the TV is just on. I would guess that it's mainly used for figuring out how people actually use DVRs, but I don't know for sure.
