Possibly. I don't think he is one of the "big 5" though. I think there are only the "big 4" and the rest are all on about the same level.

Big Boy Laroux 10-05-06 01:37 PM

i'd say ryan has had much more screen time than anyone outside the big 4, save maybe oscar.

Nesbit 10-05-06 01:40 PM

I would put order of screen time as:
Michael
Jim
Dwight
Pam
Ryan
Jan
Angela
Toby
Oscar
Kevin
Kelly
Phyllis
Stanley
Meridith
Creed

I expected that this season they would make it so that the other workers showed up in the opening credits, but I guess they didn't want to change things.

To clear things up, BJ Novak has written a handful of the episodes and was listed as associate producer until this season when he moved up to supervising producer (much as his character moved up from temp to full-time salesman).

I also never noticed that Ryan's last name is Howard...

I don't agree, but OK. They each have their moments where they are featured and it seems to even out to me. He may have a little more screen time, but he definitely doesn't have "much" more. I would say that Angela and Jan are the next in line after the big 4 as far as importance to the ongoing storylines.

Sex Fiend 10-05-06 01:50 PM

I suspect that Ryan will figure more prominently in storylines this season (if only to satisfy those in the audience who don't think his role justifies his billing in the cast).

I'm pretty sure that those in the audience who don't think his role justifies his billing in the cast will watch regardless and that their opinions are not going to alter the storyline in any way.

Yeah, pretty much. Funny how some turn a simple question into a shit storm.

Or, maybe the show does care what I think and I have more power than I initially thought.

Because he is the best dresser.

I just wondered if the character was originally designed to have a bigger part in the show.

You do know that "billing" isn't always about the size of your part, right? It could be written into his contract that he is to be a featured player.

BJ Novak has been one of the driving creative forces behind this show. I hear him talk about "The Office" in the press more than any other person besides Jenna Fischer.

Yep. Being placed in the opening credits is not a creative decision. It's contractual... it's in your contract. So the real answer to why he's in the opening credits is that the production is contractually obliged to.

Nesbit 10-05-06 03:17 PM

So you're saying BJ Ryan is a whinny bitch?

riley_dude 10-05-06 03:25 PM

So does he get paid twice???

HE Pennypacker 10-05-06 03:34 PM

They should give the Indian chick top billing as well. She has written some great episodes.

He would get paid for both jobs, but not necessarily twice what everyone else is making. He probably gets whatever the SAG minimum is for the acting, and gets paid well for being a writer/producer.

Let me put it this way, it's a lot cheaper to have a producer/writer/actor than to have a producer/writer and an actor.

If her agent can get it into her contract, she will be :)

the big train 10-05-06 05:16 PM

Fire Guy is in the credits because no one associated with the show wants their house burned to the ground.

dick_grayson 10-05-06 06:31 PM

I saw the official The Office calendar (16 month) from Target today, for those interested. It's 8 bones, by the way. You can see it here on nbc.com's website:

The Indian chick is a writer too?
She is probably the most annoying character on there. They should kill her off and then she can just keep writing.

cdollaz 10-05-06 06:40 PM

I would like to see more Todd Packer appearances.

That is the whole point of her character. I've worked with a lot of women like her and appreciate her place in The Office.

RichC2 10-05-06 07:57 PM

Hahah, dunno how I didn't see that last line coming with the earlier Entourage comment.

She's tame compared to her real life counterparts.

Venusian 10-05-06 07:57 PM

who's the girl that sits behind Jim? What's she been in?

Steam 10-05-06 07:59 PM

If Jim is not boinking her within three episodes I will seriously be offended.

redrum 10-05-06 07:59 PM

funny episode.
