Anyone else see the 30-second Dane Cook parody on MadTV about ten minutes before SNL started? Whoever set that up did their job very well and made me want to turn back to MadTV after the flat opening monologue.

The rest of the show was lazy and amazingly bad for something that people could've prepared months ahead for (i.e. Cook doing a 12 minute routine around suicide and YouTube...what was he thinking?).

The water bottle scene could've easily, easily been much better and should not have included that end junk. The closing time scene seemed to be leading up to a good line from Amisen, but nothing happened. The Clinton/Rice Weekend Update scene was painfully boring. The opening was uninspired... overall, it was horrible. Even the first performance by The Killers was way off. The second musical performance and the Al Pacino sketch were the only things that worked for me. I'll give things one more shot next week, but after that I'll move on.

If they're going to be this lazy, they should give Keenan 5-8 minutes to write whatever he wants and try to show off his skills. Even a recycled Bill Cosby Jello skit would be better than 90% of the stuff from last night.

I found a lot of the show irreverent, which I love. I'd give it a B-.

I'm a fan, too, and i actually like their first single off of this cd. but i thought the lead singer sounded AWFUL.

I have actually frequented many bars in nyc that will throw your sorry ass out almost as badly as that. It doesn't matter if you were spending $50 on a round of shots and drinks 5 minutes before. American Trash, (my old haunt) on the upper east side was about the same. BUT, one, they should have said, "It's 4am already?!?!" as that's when the bars have to close and two, once we got the joke it literally went absolutely NOWHERE.... One good idea doesn't work for 5 minutes even getting amped up. It was like a less funny version of the Sbarro sketch from last season....

That didn't take long

This one is actually 10 minutes long (though I didn't get past 10 seconds)

And this one is some short film posted back in April

That certainly can't be a coincidence, can it?

Davy Mack 10-02-06 02:48 PM

what the?!?! April?

SNL is back once again and despite a new head writer and a smaller cast, the show seems much the same as it was last season.

Opening: This was not a good way to start the season. The skit wasn't funny and it went on long after it had made its point. The writers still don't seem to realize that Will Forte is terrible as Bush.

Monologue: By my count, this lasted seven minutes. That was about six minutes and forty-five seconds too long. Simply awful. The only positive is that there was no mention of cashews this time.

TSA Training: Airport security guards are stupid. That was the joke. Not terribly original or funny.

Venezuelan TV: Round table discussion show hosted by Hugo Chavez. This had potential, but it ultimately went nowhere.

SNL Digital Short “Cubicle Fight”: I liked this one. It was the kind of bizarre skit I tend to enjoy.

Wells Fargo Presents Al Pacino Checks his bank balance: Amusing. Saved by a decent Pacino impression.

The Killers: Not particularly memorable.

Weekend Update Skit: Brian Williams finds out he didn’t get the job. One of the better parts of the episode.

Actual Weekend Update: Despite losing Tina Fey, Weekend Update was able to maintain the same level of mediocrity. Towards the end, there was a bit about the Dustin Diamond sex tape. The thread in the Other forum had better jokes.

Water Delivery Guys: At least they were honest about the skit going on long after the “funny” part had ended.

The Killers (again): The lead singer appears to be dressed like Colonel Sanders from the waist up.

Farrah Fawcett: Bizarre filler, not particularly good.

Closing Time: Simple concept, no humor.
GEICO Ad with Whitney Houston: Whitney Houston is nuts. Once again, SNL proves that it is at the cutting edge of comedy.

My grade: D

Cubicle Fight
Brian Williams
Geico Ad...

Cut the rest out and let me have the 10 minute version with these on YouTube and I give SNL an A! With the other crap...D

I finally have time to post my views of the season opener:
Cold Opening
At first I thought to myself... "Wow, it's not a Bush skit." Then I saw that Bush was on the stage, and I groaned. While the skit itself was alright, I loved Wiig's reaction to Bush's small talk and how he turned away from Samberg's 'high schooler' when he told him of interest in politics. In the back of mind I was paying more attention to the speech to hear if I was missing an inside joke, but there was none. Overall the skit was flat, but I got a few chuckles out of it.

Host's Monologue
Oh dear... I'm not a fan of Dane Cook's stand up, but I thought the YouTube stuff was great.

TSA Training
I actually liked this skit. Probably one of my favorites of the night just for the shear observation/comedy of the situation. Loved Maya's character... and the non-airport National Security question. Jinx...

Venezuelan TV
I did not like this skit at all. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. Looks like they pulled out the "Pat" outfit for Pohler's Kim Jong-il and threw on a bad wig.

SNL Digital Short “Cubicle Fight”
Funny, at first.... but I have to agree with the last line of the skit: "That went too far."

Wells Fargo presents Al Pacino
I loved it. $-14 in checking. $12M in savings. "Gotta keep $20 in your sock and the rest stuffed in the mattress." 2nd fav skit of the night.

Brian Williams
I would rather have him at the desk than Seth Meyers. I would have loved to have heard him deliver the "WU News." He was great. High point of the evening.:up:

Weekend Update
Everything fell flat. Like someone else said, there are a few other 'daily' shows that capture more humor in 5 mins of their show than in WU. Clinton/Rice.... thhhhpppptttt! Screech... scary! Plain scary!

Water Delivery Guys
Could have been great. If they would have stopped before the "plugs" of 30 Rock and Studio 60.

Farrah Fawcett
Random. Very random.

Closing Time
"You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here." I too loved the concept, but thought that it was void of humor... except for Pohler's "I'm Farrah Faucett" line.

GEICO Ad with Whitney Houston
Whitney Houston does a bump and grind on a Gieco customer. Does he have to pay a deductible for that collision? Got a slight chuckle out of me.
All in all, I liked the skits, but I didn't see Dane stand out in any of the skits. Any host could have done it with the same punch that he gave it. The Killers didn't do anything for me.

I'm gonna give it a passing grade of a C, but I sure hope that they raise the bar the next few eps.

On a side note, the short clips that we saw of the "skits" that they did for Studio 60 this week had me laughing more than the full skits that were on SNL. I loved the "Science Smience" skit and the guy who did 'Tom Cruise'... although his 'Nicholas Cage' wasn't much different than his 'Tom'.

Goldberg74 10-03-06 08:21 PM

NBC has announced the hosts/musical guests for the next four eps:
  • EP32-02 - 10/07/06 - Jaime Presley (H) Corrine Rae Bailey (M)
  • EP32-01 - 10/14/06 - Dane Cook (H) the killers (M) (original air date 09/30/06) WTF?!
  • EP32-03 - 10/21/06 - John C. Reilly (H) My Chemical Romance (M)
  • EP32-04 - 10/28/06 - Hugh Laurie (H) Beck (M)

Good diversity in the hosts for October... but repeating the Season Opener two weeks after it aired? That's nuts!

Well we all loved it so much so we just have to see it again! :p

John C Reilly i like so interested to see how he fairs aboard this sinking ship we call SNL.

MFRONE 10-04-06 12:23 AM

Could they not get a bigger musical act next week?

Hugh Laurie has potential. He has done some great comedy.

Can't wait to see the Dane Cook travesty of an episode rerun in just 11 more days. -ohbfrank-

Rogue588 10-04-06 01:20 AM

Umm...is it mandatory to break down every skit and post comments about them in the SNL threads now?

'cuz that's really more work than this show deserves..

LorenzoL 10-04-06 07:33 AM

Looking forward to the Hugh Laurie one as he has great comedic talent but then again, he will be working with the material given by the SNL writers...

Back to the topic, this show was horrible and I got two chuckles for the Brian Williams bit on WU and the Geico commercial with Whitney Houston. The rest was forgettable.

vegasbaby 10-04-06 08:14 AM

Lorne Michaels keeps getting awards like candy, and his show maintains its awfulness.

When am I going to be honored? I'm 10 times funnier than Michaels ever was.

I really enjoy the breakdowns as I often miss the show and don't have to go throught pain of actually watching it. :)

We suffer, so you don't have to!

Interesting episodes coming up. I love Jaime Pressly. Or should I say, I love to look at Jaime Pressly. Let's see how she does.
JCR doesn't impress me as much as he does some others, but I like the diversity.
Hugh Laurie was a master comic actor with Blackadder and Fry & Laurie. This one has to be one of those shows that far surpass the material, like when Alec Baldwin hosts.

TGM 10-04-06 09:40 AM

How much you wanna bet that when JCR hosts, Will Ferrell will make a surprise cameo?

JasonF 10-04-06 04:24 PM

Every time I see John C. Reilley is going to be doing something like this or the Tonight Show, I get very excited -- until I remember that the guy I'm thinking of is John C. McGinley, not John C. Reilley. No knock against Reilley, but it's always so disappointing once I remember who he is.

das Monkey 10-04-06 04:27 PM

Imagine how I feel when I realize it's not Charles Nelson Reilly.
