Slight and sometimes silly, but also sometimes moody and usually nice to look at, with fairly inoffensive characters. Probably not worth a purchase, depending on your threshhold, but fun enough to watch.

While it may be called an X-Files ripoff it is still a far different show. The only simlarities is that it is monster of the week, has a dark atmosphere & usually very serious in tone. The lead characters themselves are much different, obviously.
It's definitely good for a horror fan, but obviously there are better blind buys out there:
Buffy
Angel
Firefly
Veronica Mars
Freaks & Geeks
Alias
24
Lost
Just to name a few (although you may have most of those already. I'm not sure). I'd even add Smallville to the list of better blind buys, although Supernatural may end up better in the long run.

Definitely rentable... if not a blind buy for a TV horror fan.
Oh an another vote for Veronica Mars (even though it is not horror). I just finished S1 and was BLOWN AWAY! I hope I can rent and watch all of S2 before the third season starts!

I thought season 1 of Supernatural was awesome. Some of the episodes were much scarier than any horror movie I've seen theatrically in a long time...just creepy, atmospheric and sometimes intense. The story also moves along at a great pace and the mythology they are setting up is very cool. If you're into horror/x-files type stuff, it is definitely up your alley.
Are there better series out there on DVD? Yeah, of course. Is it worth your time if the premise catches your interest? Hell yeah. I'm picking it up when it comes out to rewatch the season before season 2 starts... I'd give it a slight edge as a blind buy over some of those other cancelled or multi-season shows slayer recommended because you can watch S1 on disc in time to catch S2 on broadcast.

Unlike other sci-fi shows, the stand-alone episodes of Supernatural are much better than the show mythology ones. Personally, I find the whole ceiling demon storyline to be pretty lame. It seems like they could have found something more interesting for the overall arc.
And this show makes me feel old, because I find the Dad to be much hotter than either of the sons.

awesome show....as a huge horror fan I would highly recommend that you watch it. As far as how you prefer watching it, I don't know. There is very few tv on dvd shows that are worthy of rewatching. Netflix or blockbuster might be a better option but regardless of how you watch it, be sure to give it a try if you like the horror genre.

Yeah, I think X-Files minus the aliens and the FBI with a WB-cast pretty much sums it up. It was a lot better than I thought it would be (especially with the "Executive Producer: McG" credit). Surprisingly serious in tone, and it surprised me by never resorting to an ongoing cliched young soap opera romance storyline. Like everything, there are spotty episodes but many are solid with good scares. I don't think it'd be a bad blind buy if you can get it cheap (under $40). You get the bonus of not having to put up with the WB's extremely aggresive and annoying on-screen logos and ads (nothing kills a scary mood like an animated logo shouting at us that there's a "fresh" One Tree Hill coming up later). If you're on the fence just wait -- there always seems to be giant sales for certain studios DVD box sets, when its 50% off or more.

BTW, when I say Monster of the Week I don't mean it in a bad way. They did some good monster of the week stuff as far as it being horror. Some of them were better than most horror films. It does have a bit of an arc, but like Jadzia mentioned this is one of the few shows where stand alones are at times better than the arc. Hopefully that'll change next season.
I agree about Veronica Mars. It is absolute gold. Definitely try to view the second season before the third. I had to download on Bit Torrent. iTunes might be selling the show and that would be a good way to view it. This would be great, but the quality is not as good as Bit Torrent I don't think.

to the original poster.....
if you are a horror fan, you should get this show. made for tv horror is usually really terrible. there was only one episode of Supernatural that I did not like (the insect one) which is saying a lot about a first season of any show.

it's a great show. look back at some of the episode threads to get a better idea of what it's about.....
i'd blind buy if it's a good deal.

Ive watched half the series now (upto episode 12) and am really enjoying it
However i am disappointed too many episodes revolve around spirits (ghosts), i'd like to see more diversity in the Monster of the week.
I've been a fan of Jenson since Dark Angel
I would like to see more gore

Well thats one thing about the series and the WB (CW), in that they are trying to equally attract horror fans as well as their normal teen base, and not very many girls would tune in if it was any more gorier...
