It's a convincing setup for a series that aims to be a mature, pay cable version of, say, Buffy the Vampire Slayer-meets-Dark Shadows or similar, but the inclusion of graphic sex into the mix makes the entire thing play more like soft-core porn.
I'm in.
He says that as a bad thing, but it's not.

Paquin is BLONDE in this??!!!! Easily the most disturbing thing about that review. Damn. This may turn out to be an even bigger letdown than 'Jezebel James' was.

Just saw the pilot. Man it was really bad.
Completely amateurish. Horrible acting and even worse dialogue. I can't believe Alan Ball wrote this. In fact I can't believe this is gonna get airtime on HBO unless it by episode 2 gets a whole hell of a lot better

Only good things:
1. Anna Paquin looked really good
2. There was nudity

Most important question. Is Anna Paquin nude?

Well.. not great, but I'm gonna stick around for when it eventually makes it to HBO. Hopefully, some things are changed in the final product, especially the little bit of special effects they used for the vamps... it wasn't good, and I'm hoping that's just a unfinished screener thing. I will say I'm a little let down for the expectations I have of Alan Ball, but I definitely won't completely give up on it yet. Oh, and I did read the first book of the series that it's based off of, and it does start exactly as the first novel does.

My "copy" of the pilot ends rather abruptly. Anyone care to (spoilerized, of course) tell me what happens at the end? It cuts off when Paquin is waiting outside the restaurant.

OK, because that's actually where my copy ends, and it seems rather abrupt (there were no credits, so that didn't help). Did that seem odd to you as an ending? Thanks for posting, by the way.

It's actually not that odd of an ending. Alan Ball said that for atleast the first season he just wanted to basically make every chapter into a single episode, and the first chapter ends in the exact same way. In fact most of the chapters in the books end on mini-cliffhangers.

Personally I found the pilot to be better than everyone had been making it out to be. I mean it could have used some editing and tweaking, but overall was very well done. I think Alan Ball was able to capture the world of Sookie very well. My only complaint is that Pacquin is definately a hard sell for Sookie, but I think in time she will be good.

Did any other fans of the books notice the many foreshadowing moments?

I agree, think with a little bit of minor tweaking it can be one of the more enjoyable HBO series in awhile. I have not read any of the books, but i think i might have to now. Are they pretty consistent?

I read somewhere(can't remember where) that they recast the friend. Can anyone confirm that? the actress in the one i saw was kind of annoying.

The books are really good -- I believe the 8th installment was published just recently.

Surprised at all the negative buzz surrounding the TV show -- given potential rewrites and recasting, it will probably be a while before this airs.

I'm pretty sure they're either almost done or finished with production on the first season. It premieres in early September.

I really hope they didn't re-cast Tara, I actually really liked character. It didn't bug me at all that she isn't part of the novels.

The books are pretty consistent and they go into a lot of depth revolving around vampire mythology of folkloire. I can't say much else besides that without giving anything away. But things definately get very interesting and a lot more crazy. It was weird watching the pilot knowing what I know from reading all 8 books.

Plus:
Spoiler:
It was really weird seeing Sookie and Bill just starting their relationship as well as her grandmother and Sookie having no idea who Erik, Pam, and Cauldine are...

They did re-cast Tara. I don't know who the new actress is but she sure is ugly compared to Brooke Kerr
I can see why Kerr was let go though, she was really horrible.

I really enjoyed this

Wasn't blown away but I only watched it b/c I felt like I had been putting it off due to not expecting much. Just wanted to watch at least the first fifteen minutes to give it a chance..

before I knew it, the ep was over and I was pretty impressed. Maybe b/c I had low expectations... maybe b/c of the vampire sex.. and Paquin looking mega-hot.

I liked the ending. It just made me want to see the next episode more.

Love those Tru:Blood ads. I'm scouting around for some pdfs of them, or I may end up trying to get originals off ebay. Check out the associated websites. Good fun.

Edit: turns out you can snag pdfs of all four magazine print ads on the 1st site above...

I've seen the red one on a bus stop poster.

I thought the pilot was fine, though a little slow-paced. I hope they can bring out more of Sookie's humor as the series progresses.
