What began as a wry and poignant post-Sept. 11 examination of the New York firefighter soul has upped its game to stand as true art. "Rescue Me" opens its third season with a trio of episodes that establish the seriocomic FX hour as quite possibly the finest drama on television and on a par with "The Sopranos" as the best written.
The threesome is by turns sardonic, wrenching, mocking, brutal, lighthearted and powerful, with Denis Leary evolving before our eyes from a comic-turned-actor into an earnest, fearless performer. It's as if the guy has somehow channeled his inner James Dean the way he embodies such raw, animal passion and hostility. Moreover, Leary and co-creator/exec producer Peter Tolan pull off the trick of moving between tones and genres with utter seamlessness in their co-written scripts, rendering categorization itself essentially obsolete.
If Emmy voters ignore this show and/or Leary's scintillating performance, it could only mean they've lapsed into a collective coma.

Dayum! Paige Turco (Mrs. Turbity) is still looking fine these days. Loving how flustered Tommy got in her presence, and now he's scheming to hit it and put a wedge between her and his godson. Good stuff.

"I didn't know he was a Pink Floyd fan."
"That's Green Day asshole"
Great start to the season.
Tommy's going to go apeshit when he finds out his brother is banging Janet.

The smoking scene when the Chief instituted the kitty was hysterical.
And I second (or third, lost count) the short at either www.fxnetwork.com or www.aol.com - it was a riot, and it better be on the third season DVD.
I finally figured out why more people aren't watching this show - it can be difficult to go from depression and tears to laughing your ass off in a minute. Those of us who are wiser and more ambi-emotional are surely blessed to have a show that appeals to our abilities. (/snark)
But seriously, the way the show goes from one extreme to the other is pretty jarring but worth it.
And now I can't wait for The Shield.
