Except it's not, but whatever. I don't get the hate either because if the average fan is asked why the hate, the stock answer always seems to be "she's soooo annoying" which in itself isn't much of an explanation.

Connor was much more polarizing in comparison, but with him it was very easy to understand why he was the way he was, what made him make such bad choices. Talk about someone who was kicked around all his life. In the end he was fully redeemed, which was a damn good thing at least to me anyway.
For introducing a kid sister out of nowhere I thought they did a great job. And there were times I really thought she added a lot to the show and others I did feel the hate and with very good reason. She acted like she was 8-10 at times, not 14 or whatever the hell age she was supposed to be, and her actions were stupid and annoying at those times. And even if you listen to Joss and the other writers talk about her she was supposed to be much younger when they envisioned her and started writing for her but they just fell in love with Michelle and went with that actor. No hate for Michelle at all, she's terrific.

Connor I just hated. Totally got why he was the way he was but didn't like the character or the actor.

Re: I just started Buffy...

Dawn was the kid sister, and all the good and not so good that came along with that. For years I liked her a hell of a lot more than big sister Buffy. For years Buffy herself was the one character I was never fond of. Not the case anymore but yeah, it was everyone else around her I enjoyed about the show, Dawn included.

Though the fact that she was a fan of anchovies just went to show she wasn't quite....right.

I dont hate the actress, I hate the character. As you say, she was supposed to be annoying, and man, she was.

I hate annoying people, just my quirk.

Re: I just started Buffy...

Over the last year or so (bridging TV challenges) I've been trying to finally watch this show. It's been slow because I'm trying to watch mostly during challenge months (TV, sci-fi/fantasy, horror), but I just hit season 2, episode 17 "Passion," and

Holy crap

Jenny Calendar. I like the character and the actress and was going to wikipedia her but said "No, I shouldn't in case there are spoilers." (So don't tell me if she comes back later.) Damn you, Joss Whedon, and your fondness for killing off characters.

Yeah, that punched me in the gut the first time I saw it. As sad deaths go in that show... I'm not sure it ranks in the top 5. There is a few in Angle that actually haunted me as if I really knew the people.

Obviously I meant Tangle; the hilariously dreadlocked vampire who often gets his long dreads yanked on in every fight. The sex scenes between him and Muffy were the highlights of season 9 of the show.

Here's the "safe for work" trailer for Adam & Eve's Buffy porn parody:

(Nothing that couldn't be shown on regular TV, but tagged just in case.)

No explanation for the extra o's either but they usually appear. Most Buffy-based messageboards aren't the best places to be if you're a fan, which is ironic but very true.

If we start bitching about aspect ratios again we can rival the thread in the HD Talk.
I never ever understood the Dawn hate.

Re: I just started Buffy...

I didn't mind Dawn at all... unless she was in a Marti Noxon episode and it turned into an afterschool special. I fault Marti for every bad choice in that show after Joss took off and didn't run the show day-to-day.

Re: I just started Buffy...

I've taken the plunge and started rewatching these for the first time in 15 years.... I really dont remember much.

I used to be OBSESSED with SMG. I don't think I ever finished the full run of the show. I'm 4 episodes into the 2nd season and... I don't remember it being so...corny. There are a few episodes here and there that are great. Does it get better? Is there a continuous story or is it the creature of the week, like it has been?

You're about to hit the major Angel plotline, which starts about halfway season 2, and is where many fans think the show kicked into high gear.

That said, the show was never as highly serialized as later shows like LOST and 24. Each season has MOTW episodes sprinkled in throughout that don't advance the season story arc, although they may push character arcs.

Re: I just started Buffy...

Going back it IS corny, but once you really get into the characters it doesn't bother you as much. Personally Spike and Drusilla are for me where the show really starts to be the show I love.

Re: I just started Buffy...

Lexi Belle looks like a (much) cuter Lady Gaga.

I've been watching ANGEL again, but this time I'm only viewing the occasional Buffy episode. I've got them in their proper viewing order which alternates between the two shows on my PS3, but I'm not really up for viewing Buffy right now all the way through.

As the show goes on, it moves to a more serial format. Most episodes had a single and separate threat, but the characters had a definite progression to them and usually a single back-story fueled by the season's "big-bad" monster that occasionally takes over the plot.

Not quite like LOST, but also not like NCIS. I'd put it somewhere in the middle like Justified.

Re: I just started Buffy...

I recently got the complete series sets of Buffy and Angel. I don't know when, but sometime soon I'm going to start watching them. I don't think I've ever watched a complete episode of either show. Someone told me to watch Buffy and Angel back to back because that's how they showed them back in the day, but I don't want to wear my player out just by ejecting the discs that much. Can I watch one series at a time and not get confused? Or is there a point where I must absolutely watch an episode of Angel after an episode of Buffy?

This conundrum paralyzed me for years, but Buffy fans convinced me I could just watch that, then go back and watch Angel later if desired. So I'm seven episodes into Buffy season 3 and loving it!

I'm going to go that route then. Sometime this week I shall start Buffy Season 1!
