Doctor Who US Premiere-Series One
I thought I would start a new thread since the first two episodes of series One are finally Premiering here in the States a year after it's broadcast in the UK.
Post your thoughts about the episodes here.
Being a fan of the original I was skeptical (especially after the FOX TV movie a few years ago) but it won me over.

It's a continuation of the original series and having a passing knowledge of certain events and villains from that will certainly increase your enjoyment, but hardly required. Anybody who is a Dr. Who n00b will have no problem keeping up with this series.

I'd never seen Doctor Who before, other than maybe a couple of late night eps on PBS. This is definitely an all new series, and enjoyable for newcomers and diehards the same.
First episode is Friday, March 17th at 9/8C on Sci-Fi.

I saw the first two episodes and I feel like they really captured the spirit of the original series well. Just hearing the TARDIS sound gave me goose bumps.
I look forward to seeing the whole season.

I'd never really watched Doctor Who either. I'd seen a few episodes on PBS years ago, but that was it. I loved this new series though. Watching it convinced me to go and buy some of the old episodes on DVD.

Watched it every friday night on PBS when I was a kid. But tried to watch an episode of the old series a while ago and couldn't sit thru it. Booooring. I'll give the new series a try.

I too used to watch the old show real late at night on PBS. Loved it even though the effects were rediculous. The interesting stories made up for the bad production values. I recently watched a few of the old episodes and I couldnt sit through them either.
In regards to whether you have to see the old show to understand the new one. No, you don't. Check Sci fi link below for info about the old show and info about the new series. In the first episode of the new show they give you info in the reintroduction of the series.

Check out the message boards on sci fi too. Many people have questions that you can get answered there as well.
Here is a bit more info...
A second, 30-second trailer for the first season of the new Doctor Who series is now airing on the Sci-Fi Channel in advance of the show's debut on March 17. Noting that the Doctor is "over 900 years old" and is "a legendary adventurer through space and time," the trailer notes that the Doctor's "limitless power fuels an endless quest for ... the perfect vacation." "The British smash hit comes to Sci-Fi," says the advert, noting the premiere date.
