Direct TV Pixelization issues?
Is anyone else having pixelization issues on Direct TV? It seems that over the past month or so we've been having some issues, and at first I thought it was my tivo, until a few other people I've talked to have had the same problem. One said he found a link that said it's because of new compression that DTV is using.
Here are the symptoms: *Black or dark scenes are VERY blotchy *alot of white on white or fast action seems to hesitate then jump |
I haven't seen any problems like that.

It's not just DirectTV. My father has DISH network and I've noticed a lot of pixelation, especially since he got a HDTV recently.

The white-on-white + fast action problem was really bad during last night's Olympic coverage of the halfpipe competition. There was one particular camera/angle which would ALWAYS pixellate badly. I had originally attributed it to NBC's satellite link from Torino... guess not!

so do most of you think it's not a Direct TV issue? I don't have HD programming, so I can't compare on that end...

What's the model number of your DVR?
I'm not sure if "TiVo" is going the way of Kleenex and is just becoming a generic term. ;) |

the olympics is an issue, and the broadcasts had to be switched to the LA Feeds, as the storm in NY was playing havoc with the broadcasts.
I'm on a local HD email list here in SF, and it has a couple of engineers from the various channels, including one from NBC, its always good stuff to read. |
i get this too once an a while the show that seems to get blotchy the most is Medium, especailly in the dark scenes

I've gotta tell you, I love watching the Winter Olympics. Maybe it's because I come from a cold weather climate myself, and maybe it's because the winter sports are just so extreme. Luge? That's a sport invented by the insane, for the insane. I'm addicted and it's all the better in high-def. I must say, however, that what NBC calls high-def leaves something to be desired. It's 1080i, sure. But talk about digital compression! If you want to know what extreme examples of compression artifacting look like, watch NBC's Winter Olympics coverage. You'll see it just about any time something large moves too fast, or when you get a ton of little somethings moving all at once. When everything's still, the image looks great. But when it gets busy... it's a blocky, UG-LY mess. NBC take note. Broadcasters are just WAY over-compressing their HD signals these days, and it's a real shame. |
I, too, watch on a DirectTivo (Philips model whatever) and that stuff last night during the half pipe drove me crazy. I can't believe they didn't give us a little message across the bottom apologizing for it.
