Anyone watching "Rollergirls" reality tv on A&E?
 

I taped the show last night but haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

It's on Monday nights at 10pm EDT and they're playing an encore tonight at 10pm EDT.

A friend of mine was a big fan of rollerderby action from the 70's so I'm curious to see it.

The ads look funny and the names of the girls are cute. Venus Envy, Cha Cha, Miss Conduct, Punky Bruiser, etc. I was kidding my wife that Mrs. Pusser would be a good name for a rollergirl. Or maybe not.

So, what was your review of the show???

I watched it. It was pretty interesting for this first hour. Nice build up to the final "bout" for the Rhinestone Cowgirls vs. the Putas del Fuegos.

Cha Cha definitely went a little overboard psycho on her teammates who seemingly "replaced" (i.e. forgot about) her after a certain injury last season took her out of the game. She was obviously overly bitter - I mean that IS how teams work. They can't just drop out of the league because someone got hurt and can't continue to play. They need to find a replacement and train with the new person.

Also I have a feeling this "pilot" episode was a little watered down. I would imagine there is a more butch, lesbian aspect as well as more recreational drug use involved with the sport that is going to show up later (the preview for next week's installment somewhat alleges this to be the case).

I will watch it again. It is definitely an interesting sub-culture that is entertaining to learn more about for at least a season.

my girlfriend's sister is on a rollerderby team in denver colorado (rocky mountain rollergirls). i went to one of her bouts in november and partied with the girls afterward. definitely a lesbian/bi element, a goth/emo influence too, but most of the the girls are just straight tomboys. didn't see any serious drug use, just a lot of drinking and smoking. my girlfriend's sister is a devoted mother, doesn't smoke, doesn't do drugs, avoids red meat, works as a waitress, can't get her boyfriend to commit, etc, etc. just like anyone else.

btw, she had tried to register under the name 'Venus Envy' and discovered it had been taken (by a girl featured in the pilot episode).

Shit, I remember Roller Derby from back in the 70's. Didn't they try to re-hype it in the late 80's and 90's? Anyway, I saw a bit of this tonight and it seemed like show that might be very interesting.

So what's the deal? Do they mix Rollerblades with conventional skates? Ihear dmention of Rollerblades but the pics Buford posted have conventional skates in them. I would think Rollerblades would be easier to use. Hell, even I skate better on Rollerblades than old fashioned skates.

So say you! Do you know how the bout is played? Rollerblades would NOT work too well. In fact, a lot (if not all) of the girls have these conventional skates without the ankle support (so it is more like a shoe or mid than a high top).

Man, I want to go to my trashey rock n roll rollarskating derbies without any gay rollarblades.

I thought this activity was gone years ago. I almost can't believe A&E is showing this trash. Where is the Arts in Arts & Entertainment?

Used to be, they took roller derby off the air because it wasn't economically viable, i.e., the people who watched it were too poor and stupid to afford to buy anything advertised. Now I guess people will just watch any trashy shit.

Bullshit. I know I've seen them used in Roller Derby. Perhpas no in the recent version, but I know I saw the in the past.

I'm not a fan of the new school "shoot" style derby ( too much of the "smark" vibe going around) & this show does NOT help change my mind.
I think time is better spent ( if you are a derby fan) watching the "Demon of the Derby" DVD.
Even in her 70's , Ann Calvello could beat the crap outta those women give a wink & a nod to the smarks & not kayfabe (while flirting with all the men in the audience).

Finally saw some of this today. I can describe it as a very poorly done Curb Your Enthusiasm. At least they could have put some actual Roller Derby into it. Or at least skipped the extremely phoney melodrama. "Their lives and sport are real." -ohbfrank- The sad thing is it felt like there could have been a good show made out of this world.

Question: why do they use old-fashioned, 4-wheeled roller skates instead of roller blades? Aren't roller blades superior, speed-wise?
