G4 trying to get their mits on ST:OS and ST:TNG
... wasn't "The Man Show" enough?
G4 network grabs 'Star Trek' If deal goes through, cable station to get original series, 'TNG' Monday, December 19, 2005; Posted: 9:27 a.m. EST (14:27 GMT) LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- G4 is about to boldly go where many networks have gone before. The Comcast-owned cable network is close to acquiring the syndication rights to the original "Star Trek" and one of its spinoffs, "Star Trek: The Next Generation" from Paramount Domestic Television, sources said. "Trek" has been a syndication fixture since the first edition blossomed there after its brief network run in the late '60s. Sources also suggest that "Trek" will be part of a Comcast effort next year to reposition the channel brand of G4, which struggled to establish itself as the TV home for video gamers, in a broader play for young male viewers. A name change also is being considered. "Video games are the core of G4's programming strategy," the spokeswoman said. "They are the foundation and basis of our network. Any programming we add to our slate will be attractive to a gamer audience and serve the male 18-34 demographic." ... read full article |
I've all but removed G4 from my program guide. Once they fucked over all of the good TechTV shows, I abandoned ship. Unless they put porn on, I doubt I'll be tuning in.

There's nothing like a bunch of specialized networks that show generalized programming. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go watch Liar, Liar on Sci-Fi (sic).

M'eh. I have my DVDs. It doesn't matter to me what channel plays them.

Man, I miss the good ole days when cable networks but on original programming to distinguish themselves from other channels!
So now we are gonna have another SpikeTV ? |

I dig this channel... The Original Man Show, Fastlane, Attack of the Show, and they run some pretty cool specials regularly...
Not too bad, and I'm not even all that into games... |

Not too bad, and I'm not even all that into games... Err, and what do the programs you mentioned (or most of the programming on G4 anymore) have to do with games? For the most part, absolutely nothing. |
Just saying I dig the channel... But thanks...

Well, when I think of a Network devoted to games I usually think that they would show games and game related programing. But hey, that's just me.
I guess we should have given up on the idea of specialized channels a long time ago. I mean, whens the last time MTV actually showed a music video? It really hit hard when Cartoon Network was showing live action movies. |

das You know, that very movie came up in a discussion of the SciFi channel here in this forum in the not too distant past, and I'll say here what I said then. I think Liar, Liar is a lot closer to "sci-fi" than the latest "attack of the killer goldfish" type movies they have on all the time. From time to time, I enjoy going to used bookstores and finding old collections of short science fiction stories, stories that dealt with more than just robots and lazerswords and spaceships, but stories that challenged the mind, with explorations of the strange and unusual. Liar, Liar is far closer to some of those old stories than most of the garbage they play, and it's certainly a far cry better than Braveheart, which I also believe they play? As for G4 getting Trek, while I do think it's kinda odd that they have so much non-game stuff, you have to admit that Trek is pretty close to their demographic. Maybe they won't cut TOS to pieces by putting in commercial breaks where they don't exist, like SciFi channel did when they first got the series. |
yeah, I am so happy I will have another Spike TV channel. Hey if that bombs maybe they can make a channel devoted to game shows, I hear those are popular.
