More detailed sypnosis:

Spoiler:
"In 'The First (Annoyed Grunt) El,' when Reverend Lovejoy's car breaks down en route to Christmas mass, Homer takes over the sermon and delivers his version of the birth of Christ (Bart) to his parents Joseph (Homer) and Mary (Marge).

"'I Saw Grampa Cussing Santa Claus' finds Grampa reminiscing about his daredevil days as a WWII fighter pilot, when he was stranded on an island alongside his gunner, Burns. Grampa recalls mistaking Santa Claus for an enemy aircraft and gunning him down from the sky. Realizing their mistake, Grampa helps Jolly Ol' St. Nick to safety, only to have Burns steal the sleigh and escape the island -- leaving Grampa stranded again.

"The final installment, 'The Nutcracker ... Sweet,' which finds the townspeople of Springfield preparing for Christmas Day, is set to the tune of the famed Nutcracker ballet."

The speech is at 9pm ET I believe, so Simpsons shouldn't be affected.

Moe's annual suicide attempts :-)

"Eighteen wheels and they all missed me!"

Does the Simpsons run a short opening in order to run a longer episode or more commercials? I can't remember last time I saw Bart at the chalkboard.

Didn't really care much for the first story but I enjoyed the Nutcracker one the most.

Not as good as the previous Bible Simpsons episode but enjoyable nonetheless.

I think in the DVD audio commentaries they say the chalkboard stuff and some of the longer couch gags are used when a show is running short.

One of the better eps this season IMO. Loved Flanders ripping off his suit to have preist gear underneath.

Will this be a new annual tradition? (Nothing like starting one 17 years in! )

Groucho 12-19-05 08:41 AM

"Not now, I'm watching the Orange Bowl!"

Regarding Santa getting shot down: South Park did it!

mmconhea 12-19-05 11:19 AM

one of the best in years.
The Santa Chase seen had me rolling and the song at the end was classic.
A ton... ton... of great lines from this one.

I didn't really laugh out loud too much in this one, but I still thought it was pretty good.

Good ep. Much better than I was expecting, for some reason. Some funny stuff this week.

On one of the DVD commentaries, they said that Fox has cut the episodes by more than two minutes so they can run more commercials. They were complaining that 2 minutes is enough for a whole subplot. I figure that's why the chalkboard is gone.

Wow, i'm surprized so many people liked this one. I thought it was terrible and almost unwatchable. There were some okay parts in the nut cracker segment, but the first 2 were really thrown together and just plan boring (the WWII one)
