AFI's top TV programs of 2005

24
Battlestar Galacrica
Deadwood
Grey's Anatomy
House
Lost
Rescue Me
Sleeper Cell
Sometimes In April
Veronica Mars

I've watched the first 2 episodes of Sleeper Cell and have not been impressed yet. Good to see Grey's made it and the Housewives did not.

Nor sure if they didn't count sitcoms or just ignored them.

Rome and SVU would be the only ones I would add.

LorenzoL 12-12-05 05:07 PM

Nice to see Veronica Mars on the list.

clckworang 12-12-05 05:19 PM

Very nice to see Veronica Mars on there. What about comedies? Did they have a separate category or are they just not recognizing them?

Deftones 12-12-05 05:30 PM

Nice to see Rescue Me get some props, but w/o The Shield, this list is nothing.

grunter 12-12-05 05:35 PM

Wait.

A critic's list without "Arrested Development?"

Clearly the world must be ending.

nny 12-12-05 05:43 PM

So happy to not see AD on there. It's been terrible this year. BTW, it was on the list last year when it actually deserved it.

My list, in order:

1. Rescue Me
2. Lost
3. RW/RR challenge
4. Grey's Anatomy
5. Family Guy
6. Starved
7. One Tree Hill
8. Veronica Mars
9. Malcolm in the Middle
10.Medium

Ovid 12-12-05 06:46 PM

No Rome!?

yes, completely awesome.

:hscratch: as to why 24 made the list over other, better shows. (Yeah, it was great a couple of years ago, but not this year.)

nny 12-12-05 10:39 PM

I watched the season premiere of 24 this year and thought it was the single worst hour of TV I saw all year. I've seen many people say this was the best season of 24 yet.

Joe Molotov 12-12-05 10:55 PM

Battlestar Galactica

Charlie Goose 12-12-05 11:06 PM

24 - Yes, still a very good show.
Battlestar Galactica - Never saw this one, or the original.
Deadwood - Season 1 was better.
Grey's Anatomy - Watched it twice, didn't like it.
House - A little repetitive, but the characters and performances are top notch.
Lost - Well, DUH!
Rescue Me - Hate this show. Hate Leary even more.
Sleeper Cell - Never saw.
Sometimes In April - Never heard of it.
Veronica Mars - Yes!

The omission of The Shield is ridiculous.

All IMHO opinion, of course.

Jimmy James 12-12-05 11:15 PM

My list:

1) The Shield
2) Gilmore Girls
3) Veronica Mars
4) Arrested Development
5) The Office

Honestly, that's pretty much the extent of the amazing TV on right now if you ask me. I'm assuming we don't count shows that debuted in fall 2005.

RayChuang 12-12-05 11:16 PM

I just hope recognition like this will get Veronica Mars the Emmy nominations that it richly deserves. :)

By the way, I think there is a chance we might just see Battlestar Galactica get a Best Dramatic Series Emmy nomination.

Unless you think VM would get a nod in the comedic category, I think you're being *wildly* optimistic. Think about it -- VM and BG both getting nominated? I'd have people pinching me all day.

Aislematt 12-12-05 11:24 PM

Great list, though like others I wonder about the lack of comedic shows.

Really nice to see Veronica Mars and Battlestar get nods

Jeremy517 12-12-05 11:29 PM

UPN getting any nomination is extremely unlikely. WB hasn't gotten any for Gilmore Girls/Lauren Graham, despite terrible competition in the comedy group. Veronica Mars will suffer the same fate, even more so considering the drama competition is insanely tough.

Jeremy517 12-12-05 11:30 PM

But does anyone still take the Emmys seriously? :hscratch:

There's a better chance of this happeninghttp://cache.boston.com/images/bosto...s/pigs_fly.jpg

I'm just glad the AFI -- the American Film Institute -- is telling us which TV shows they like. Because whose opinion on TV could possibly be more important than the American Film Institute's?

Next week: TV Guide's list of the year's best movies.

I think the even better way of driving this point home is to note that Kelly Bishop is a very experienced and well connected actress with a Tony win to her name while Edward Herrmann is a very experienced and well connected actor who actually has five Emmy nominations and one win to his name. These two cannot get nominated for their work on the show. Nobody on Veronica Mars has close to that type of pedigree

AFI isn't just about films, they do TV too. Also TV Guide talks about movies sometimes because, you know, movies come on TV.

Did it really? Wow. For one of its weaker seasons, too.
