Anyone tired of the viewer numbers being used by CBS ads?

80 million people watch CSI!

50 million people watch Numb3rs!

I'm tired of these types of claims for the ads for CBS shows.

Steam 12-11-05 10:07 PM

How the hell do they figure those numbers out? It obviously isn't average single episode rating, or even the total number of viewers this season. The only thing I can think of is they take the average rating and multiply by how many people are watching each tv on average and even that doesn't make sense.

Screw you CBS, math sucks.

Patman 12-11-05 10:28 PM

Yeah, it's BS.

ShallowHal 12-12-05 06:04 AM

I'd rather have a dozen numbers in one promo than one number each in a dozen promos. Even though I FF during CSI, the amount of promos for other CBS shows seems equal to commercial time!

DVD Josh 12-12-05 07:13 AM

I don't believe them anyway. My favorite is "CBS, Home of America's favorite Friday prime-time drama featuring math".

Fuck you CBS. Start playing more sports in HD. No wonder you are losing sports deals left and right.

Achtung 12-12-05 10:49 AM

I'll be happy if CBS in Chicago figures out a way to get their HD signal to my antenna. All the other networks can do it.

But getting back to the original question, how the hell do they actually come up with those numbers? Literally it seems like they pulled them out of their asses.

Tscott 12-12-05 11:12 AM

As one of the 215 million Americans who doesn't regularly watch CBS, I don't see these ads so they haven't bothered me.

[obligatory response]who watches commercials? [/obligatory response]

Don't have a choice during sporting events or *gasp* live TV. Although, I guess outside of sports I don't watch anything on CBS. Must not be old enough to appreciate their brand of TV.

however, that new show with Tom Cavanaugh looks quite good. Seems like a mix of male SITC and High Fidelity. Good be a nice mix.

Red Dog 12-12-05 02:19 PM

I generally don't care what most of the carbon blobs watch. If CBS wants to promote what the blobs watch, what do I care.

Frankly, there isn't much non-sports programming on CBS that I watch anymore: TAR (not the current one), Survivor and CSI. That's it. They are heavily invested in procedural dramas and while they are strong now, I can see it all crashing at some point (much like NBC).

I don't see that as a reason why they are losing sports deals. Plus they seem quite content with the 3 major properties they have: pro football, the PGA Tour, and college hoops.

I agree with your sentiment though. If CBS really wants to do something good: upgrade their sports in HD. Having only 3 NFL games in HD per week is ridiculous.

You know those sticks you put shoes on the end of? They're for avoiding commercials during sports or live TV. ;)

I think CBS is a lot better on HD than the others. I have never seen a non-HD NFL game on CBS since I got a HD tv last summer, maybe I am lucky here. All the NCAA football games I have seen are in HD. ABC SUCKS for HD. They have MNF, and then this year Big 12 champ game and USC-UCLA. These are the only 2 NCAA games I have seen in HD, this is BS.

calhoun07 12-12-05 04:06 PM

I don't care what marketing ploy they use, I am still not watching it.

Morf 12-12-05 04:21 PM

Numb3rs rocks. Even my wife agrees, and she hates math. :p

you must not live in a football town. Since almost all of the raven's games this year on cbs have not been shown in hd.

I live in OKC which is Dallas/KC land, Fox carries all the games of one and CBS the other. All the NFL on CBS this year was HD.

Cartload 12-12-05 05:44 PM

Yeah, I'm also getting tired of hearing the CBS commentators for NFL games mentioning it every 5 seconds.

I must say however that their HD broadcasts of NFL game look waaaaay better than the Fox ones. 9 times out of 10, I'll watch the game on CBS just for that reason alone.

GuessWho 12-12-05 07:03 PM

thread title should say "numb3rs"

Agreed. I guess its the 1080i vs 720p.

Unfortunately I have to use the Dish Network CBS-HD feed from New York, and the game is often blacked out.

Red Dog 12-13-05 11:08 AM

I'd rather have a complete 720p HD NFL schedule than 3 games/week 1080i schedule. At least with FOX, you are guaranteed getting all the games broadcast locally in HD.

Chew 01-18-06 06:42 AM

Here's a new one that confuses me:

CBS states Criminal Minds is the most watched new drama of the season.

ABC states Commander in Chief is the most watched new drama of the season.

Who's right?

Achtung 01-18-06 01:12 PM

Criminal Minds, obviously, since its watched by eleventy billion people!!! :D

Are they also claiming it's TV's 1st female U.S. President? ;)
