Masters of Horror - "The Deer Woman" - 12/9/05
 

I'm not sure if I'll be in the minority or majority with this episode... I personally thought it was excellent for what it was, a tongue-in-cheek sorta-horror story. I loved the montage of the guy thinking about various ways the trucker could have died. The chick hitting him over the head with an amputated deer leg was hillarious. The only problem is I'm not sure if I found it enjoyable because it was well done or simply because it followed Homecoming.

And next week... That's the episode I've been waiting months for. It looks amazing. I loved the Ninth Gate, and this looks like a similar story except with a film. I guess after this next one the show is on break for Christmas/New Years?

Thought it was horrible. Just an all around dull story period. Other than a couple of light laughs, this was one of the worst episodes along with Homecoming. Seems the series is getting worse instead of better.

And who was playing the black beat cop? One of the worst actors on the show by far the entire season.

I hope next week's episode is better but I am not holding my breath.

I was really looking forward to this series when I heard it announced but for the most part it has been extremely disappointing. I'd only call a couple of the episodes "above average" with the majority being unbearable. They obviously knew which one to start off with, since I consider it to be the best (that's not saying a bunch) but recently.. wow. Homecoming in particular was just absurd. I didn't want to tune into "Masters of Horror" to see someone's poorly disguised attack on the Bush administration.

This series has lacked both "master" and "horror".

I thought I was watching a twisted episode of Dream On. ;)

Whoa! What happened to the ending? Just when it started to get cool and creepy, THE END(?)

At least it was good to see that Brian Benben is alive and well. Always thought he was an underrated actor. Unfortunately I can't say the same for--Oh, it's already been mentioned.

More like the worst actor I've seen since the new millenium began.

The already-mentioned montage was fun and clever (And risky given the limited running time) but I'm already getting sick of the desolate, misty background look that so many of these episodes have had. So far I think every show has had a scene filmed on the same road at night time. Is it supposed to be intentional? If it is, just re-name the show "Tales from teh Canada"!

Overall, a decent breath of fresh air off the heels of the controversial "Homecoming".

Damn, I'm really in the minority here... I thought this, along with the Gordon and Argento episodes, was pretty good. Nothing spectacular, but solid entertainment. The rest of the episodes, I agree, are pure shit which I'll never watch again.

Likers of this episode -- you're not alone. I liked it too. Nothing special going on (and yeah, that ending isn't so great), but Brian Benben's lead character, the adorable "Deer Woman" (if I saw those eyes and smile, I'd probably forget to check for the feet too), some hilarious comic bits ... it added up to an entertaining 60 minutes for me. Hell, it's not like Landis is a horror director (as he'll readily admit) -- this is pretty much what I'd expect. After "Homecoming", I'm happy with just being entertained. And Carpenter looks to take things back into scary next week.

I also found this ep to be very entertaining. Again, not scary, but a fun and entertaining way to spend an hour. As was already said, the montage where the lead character was thinking of different death scenarios had me cracking up. But the ending was quite abrupt (to say the least). I also forgot how likable of an actor Brian Benben could be.

I still don't know what some people are expecting from these shows. I've enjoyed all of them on some level or another, with the possible exception of Dance of the Dead. True, not all of them were true horror, but I thought they were entertaining yarns. I would still rather watch Homecoming than a lot of other crap that can be found on Friday nights.

I'm very interested in next week's installment as well.

Best part was the reference to American Werewolf... Other than that, pretty lackluster, IMO.

I certainly liked it. I found it an entertaining change of pace from the depressing disappointments that have come out of this series. I have also liked "Incident" and "Jenifer"; on the fence with "Homecoming".

Damn, I hope Carpenter can pull the fat out of the fire.

Finally got around to this and was shocked to find that I liked it. The "horror" story was stupid, but it was pretty funny. "Jenifer" was at least really fucked up, and I applaud that, but this was the only one since "Incident" that was actually entertaining and not a waste of my time. The "killer theory" montage was great, and it's always good to see Benben as well as Alex Zahara. The tall cop was Anthony Griffith, and he should stick to stand-up (in truth he's not very good at that either). He must have dirt on the Landis clan, because I can't believe anyone would hire him unless blackmailed to do so.

This has been my favorite of the series so far. I thought almost everything worked really well (except for the black cop), even if it wasn't scary. I laughed out loud several times and thought the "what if" montage was great as was the autopsy discussions. The nod to American Werewolf was a nice touch too. Good to see Benben working again and that Deer chick... woah. She can trample me to death anyday.

It's funny, I set up my TiVo to record this at 3:00AM. I fell asleep on the couch that night and woke up when the animatronic deer was talking in the casino and I audibly groaned, not even wanting to watch it. Now I think it's the best one I've seen. As Monkey said I rate them Deer, Incident, Jenifer, then a bunch of crap, Homecoming.
