I voted for Dwight. I think that he's more in line with what the producers wanted for the character in the first place. Gervias (I think it was him, if I recall right) talked about how the casting of Gareth was not what they had in mind for that character, but they could never find what they were looking for for that character in the first place, and when they cast who they did for Gareth, they just made it work.

I also voted for Dwight because I think he's a bigger loser, and that's always good in comedy.

Nefarious 12-07-05 10:15 PM

Gareth did/said some sick, perverted shit. At the end of the day he's whom I would be the least comfortable being around.

I agree with others in that I don't know a Dwight but I've come across a few Gareths.

dcswirl 12-07-05 10:51 PM

Not to take anything away from Dwight, but I gotta go with Gareth. It's been said already, but I've known plenty of people like Gareth, but none like Dwight.

DamingR 12-07-05 11:31 PM

Dwight is wayyyy too over the top. Gareth all the way.

Gareth > Dwight

nny 12-08-05 12:22 AM

Dwight is terrible. The biggest reason I tried the show was because I loved Rainn in SFU, but despite being occasionally funny, he really brings the show down imo. I think Gareth might be my favorite from the UK show.

Ovid 12-08-05 12:40 AM

In terms of quirky humor, I could go either way. But Gareth had a humanity and akwardness of being young and trying to fit in that is completly devoid in Dwight.

Not to mention: "I was thinking if a boy will ever be born that swims faster than a shark"

No brainer!

Territorial army...

I pick Gareth... I've warmed up to the Dwight character, but Gareth is still tops.

Yeah, the sidecar face was hilarious, but another classic had to be "Two lesbians, probably. Sisters... I'm just watching."

Without a doubt the best moment of the UK first season...

Hubcap 12-08-05 07:50 AM

I just caught dwight in a episode of charmed and he still had those crazy looking eyes like he did in that halloween episode when he was a sith lord. Never realized he was in aything before the office.

pinata242 12-08-05 07:54 AM

Dwight explosion overnight! Went to bed and the margin was 3, first thing today it is 11? How come none of the Dwight-voters post anything? Scared to admit it?! ;)

I liked Tim's awestruck repsonse better:
"I never thought I'd say this, but can I hear more from Gareth please?"

100% agree - that's why my vote goes for Gareth.

Meatpants 12-08-05 11:46 AM

How could anyone vote for Dwight? He could never be in the territorial army.

Nefarious 12-08-05 11:47 AM

I wonder how many Dwight voters have never even seen the UK version.

I have seen the first series but not the second series or special, and I voted for Dwigt.

Patman 12-08-05 01:26 PM

Had to go with Gareth as well. Dwigt borders on being a psycho at times.

Of course, that led to some classic Tim, during the 'invetigation':

G: ...in this room, I have special-
T: - needs?
G: No. I am a special-
T: - needs child?
G: No. And that's not even funny. Alright? I won't have you fired because-
T: - you couldn't?
G: Right. That's all...
T: Thank you.

...And I wonder how many Gareth voters have actually given the U.S. series a chance?

(Watching one or two U.S. episodes before declaring the U.K. version better doesn't count.)

pinata242 12-08-05 01:59 PM

I've watched every single episode of the U.S. series. I fully admit that it started out living in the shadow of the U.K. version. Hard not to compare them when the first episode is nearly a direct copy.

I almost gave up last season, but the Basketball and Diversity Training eps were hilarious. Again, almost gave up this season until Halloween. That episode finally, imo, stood on its own. It has been getting better and I thought the "Yankee Swap" episode was damn near perfect.

Whether the series as a whole is as good / better / different enough from the other is irrelevant to this conversation. This is about Gareth vs. Dwight. Having seen both, Gareth is not only funnier and more pathetic, he's far more believable as a human being. Which is probably why he is both funnier and more pathetic and thus the better character, especially in a documentary-style, "this is the real world" type show.

I voted for Gareth. I believe I've seen every episode of the US version. It's a great show - very, very, funny. I like the Dwight character too, and appreciate the differences between him and Gareth. It's good that he doesn't try to be a carbon copy, but does his own thing instead.

As good as the US version is, and as funny as Dwight is, I think Gareth is pure genius. pinata242 gets it right: he's funnier and more pathetic, and also more real. I like his interactions with the Tim/Jim character more, and I like watching Tim and Dawn wind him up and seeing how he falls for it. The US show tries to capture some of this but it really doesn't do it justice.

Both characters are very good, but only one is great.

NORML54601 12-08-05 09:10 PM

Have seen all the eps of both series and I voted for Gareth. Along with the other moments mentioned I'd have to add the Health & Safety training as one of the greats.

I've watched all of both. To clarify, I wasn't attempting to call anyone out but was just making an observation that the results could be skewed.

I enjoyed the first season of the US version but it was largely just using the same gags, etc. that were in the UK version. This season of the US show has been phenomenal and some of the best comedy I've ever seen on network television.
