ABC Pulls the Plug on 'Night Stalker'
By Brian Ford Sullivan

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- ABC has axed its struggling freshman drama "Night Stalker" after six airings.

Executive producer Frank Spotnitz broke the news on his production company's blog, Big Light Productions, yesterday:

"It is with regret that I confirm 'Night Stalker' has been canceled. While I’m disappointed the series has come to an end, I am enormously grateful for the experience and the opportunity given me by the network and Touchstone Television. I would like to thank our amazingly talented cast, wonderful crew, killer post-production department, terrific writing staff, producers and partners in crime Daniel Sackheim and John Peter Kousakis, the incredible Jana Fain, and all of you who watched and enjoyed the show. It was a blast."

Scheduling updates released this morning by ABC confirmed the news as the Alphabet will air the first half of an expanded two-hour "Primetime" in the show's Thursday, 9:00/8:00c time period this week.

Previously planned airings of "Finding Nemo" and the original movie "Have No Fear: The Life of Pope John Paul II" will fill the hour on November 24 and December 1. A permanent replacement will likely be announced in the coming weeks.

The cancellation comes on the heels of the show's series-low 3.94 million viewer performance (according to preliminary Nielsen numbers) for its most-recent airing.

It's not clear how many installments of the show's initial 13-episode order were produced.
I actually thought the show was okay, but not good enough for me to be upset about this news. At least it frees up my Thursday logjam a bit.

I watched a few episodes and couldn't stomach it. WB pretty much beat them to the punch with Supernatural.

Jadzia 11-14-05 01:58 PM

I still have never watched any off my Tivo. Should I even bother now?

meritocracy 11-14-05 02:00 PM

I thought the pilot was laughable, and only caught one other ep. prior to this announcement. It won't be missed by me.

I'm a sucker for most "supernatural" type shows, but I deleted my Season Pass after the first episode. Mediocre at best. Personally, I'd just nuke 'em.

dadaluholla 11-14-05 02:32 PM

yeah I watched the first episode and had the feeling it wasn't going anywhere. Dropped it after that. Looks like most of america did too.

mike7162 11-14-05 03:07 PM

More scenes with Gabrielle Union in tiny panties would have definately helped.

clckworang 11-14-05 03:09 PM

Some of the previews looked decent, but I didn't hear that many good things about it so I never actually took the plunge and watched it. I guess I'm happy now that I didn't.

nny 11-14-05 03:22 PM

I don't understand all the praise for Supernatural. Usually I'm a WB fanboy, but I haven't found anything to like about Supernatural. OTOH, Night Stalker really impressed me. I liked the main theme by Phillip Glass, the characters, and some of the storylines. Also, unlike just about any other show, it's actually a little scary. I didn't like it enough to care about it getting cancelled, but I am surprised people were so negative towards the show.

HistoryProf 11-14-05 03:52 PM

i watched it twice, and it was pretty damned bad. buh-bye.

Jason 11-14-05 04:17 PM

Interesting. I wonder if they'll leave the show up on the iTunes store. Not that I care about Night Stalker, but it will be interesting for the development of this whole video download business to see how they handle catalog titles/cancelled programs.

benedict 11-14-05 04:25 PM

Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it!

I watched -- though wasn't a huge fan. Expected this I suppose.

yes please.

Jadzia 11-14-05 05:29 PM

Wow, so far this thread is getting more views than the show itself did.

I went ahead and deleted my recordings. I could use the Tivo space anyway.

Daniel-A 11-14-05 06:02 PM

Wasn't there a main thread last season for the cancellations?
We need to start one up for this season.

ruk 11-14-05 06:17 PM

sucks, they were in the middle of a 2 part episode,. atleast have the decency to show the next episode.

movielib 11-14-05 06:26 PM

I won't miss it.

Josh-da-man 11-14-05 08:07 PM

Too. Many. X-Files. Clones.

Nightstalker.
Surface.
Invasion.
Threshold.
Supernatural.

There were more now than there were when The X-Files was airing.

It's strange that "Lost" seems to have inspired so many of them, as "Lost" really has little to do with The X-Files. While there are ambiguous supernatural overtones, the similarities end there. It's an ensemble cast. It's takes place in a can. The protagonists aren't investigating anything; they're struggling to survive.

DRG 11-14-05 08:53 PM

The problem I had with the show is that the "reporter" thing didn't really play in 2005. It just seemed bizarre that reporters were granted the type of access they were, especially considering they ultimately were never allowed to actually write about any of their discoveries.

ditto.

I liked the new Night Stalker, although it did have a half-baked X-Files-ness about it. (I always wondering if some of the scripts were unused ones left over from that show.) But it was at least as good as Supernatural, if not better. (Supernatural is okay, but way overhyped and not nearly as good as EW claims.)

superman69 11-15-05 12:39 AM

i watched the 1st episode, 1/2 way through i was liking it, noticed Spotnitz name so i was semi excited (loved X-files). i have them all on my DVR, and i will be dumpin them now, since what could i really miss?

No joke. The show wasn't great or anything, but they were about to reveal what "really happened" to his wife. At least let them finish that up.

Daniel-A 11-15-05 03:11 AM

I've watched the show. Can't say I cared much for it. It was more like background noise to whatever I was actually doing. I could really care less that it was canceled evem im the middle of a 2part episode.

DonnachaOne 11-15-05 03:30 AM

Great! Means I can get my proper remake off the ground, with Steve Buscemi. :)

AGuyNamedMike 11-15-05 06:57 AM

I'm glad to see it go. Ms. Union's sex appeal still doesn't make up for the wooden quality of her acting. Odd to see so many Supernatural haters, though. That show succeeds on so many levels, especially when compared to this one. The characters are more inviting, the dialogue is funnier, and the whole composition is cleaner and flows better without seeming so contrived or forcefully stylish (on Night Stalker the ending voiceover with key words popping up on the screen? WTF?). I gave them all (Threshold, Surface, this, Supernatural, Invasion) a try and am only sticking with the last two. I'd give them up too, but don't take away My Name is Earl!

Aw shucks. I was gonna say to at least watch "The Five People You Meet in Hell" directed by Rob Bowman. It was actually pretty good IMO.

I actually enjoyed this show much more than Supernatural... which now that my WB affliate has moved it to 9pm on Sunday nights has forced me to pretty much abandon it too. :(

Xander 11-15-05 09:47 AM

Hmmm...not sure how I feel about this. I only watched the first ep, which I wasn't that impressed with. I was still going to give it a chance, just haven't gotten around to watching the other eps on my Tivo yet. Supernatural rocks, so I'm happy to get my supernatural fix from it. Ah well, one less conflict on Thursday nights. :)

That being said....

Although inconsistent, the short-lived TV show quickly become a long-time cult favourite, and has frequently been attributed as the inspiration of Chris Carter's The X-Files. The parallels are obvious: as with Carter's show, each week on Kolchak:The Night Stalker our smart-mouthed, crusading hero gets hold of a seemingly-straightforward, but officially unexplained mystery, a mystery that upon further investigation somehow blossoms into a wild encounter with werewolves, killer robots, vampires, invisible aliens, or other even weirder creatures. And each week, our hero not only has to do battle with these bizarre (and lethal) supernatural entities, he also has to cross swords with skeptical colleagues, disbelieving superiors, and hostile public officials, all trying for one reason or another to stop him from getting at, and/or revealing, The Truth. Now if that doesn't sound like a template for the X-Files' Fox Mulder, what does?

Fortunately, Carter himself has acknowledged Kolchak as a major X-Files inspiration. In fact, Carter even went so far as to cast McGavin in a recurring role as a retired X-Files veteran with an acerbic personality and a familiar rumpled wardrobe

Despite its cult-like following, however, Kolchak: The Night Stalker only lasted for one season. Some say it was because of mediocre ratings; others claim that Jeff Rice (the original creator of the Kolchak character, remember?) derailed the series when he sued the production company, allegedly because the TV show was done without his permission. Whatever the reason for its demise, though, at its best Kolchak: The Night Stalker was certainly one of the top hard-boiled horror comedies ever made.

I don't think there was any "Supernatural Hate" in any posting here, just some of us think it gets overpraised about as much as the new Night Stalker gets slammed. Instead, I rate both shows about the same - neither one is great, but both are interesting enough to be watchable.

(P.S. I think a lot of the hatred toward the new Night Stalker had a lot to do with it being an inferior remake of the original show. People have a chip on the shoulder with the show, so it had virtually no chance. Change the name of the show and the characters, but keep the plots exactly the same otherwise, and I think this show would've gotten as much love as Supernatural currently gets.)

Deadman31 11-16-05 09:34 AM

I was a big fan of the new Night Stalker so I will miss it.

riley_dude 11-16-05 11:18 AM

I was curious but there was too much else on at that time period so never saw an episode. I'm sure that was the case with most people.
They shouldnt have changed the premise that radically.

I think Supernatural is very overrated, veryyy dull and not at all scary.

DRG 11-16-05 11:31 AM

Well, as for Supernatural vs Night Stalker, I think Supernatural started off very strong but has since settled into 'good but not great' territory. Night Stalker didn't impress me right off the bat, but it was slowly getting more interesting. Too slowly, unfortunately.

Peep 11-16-05 10:25 PM

Worst of the new "horror" shows this year (except for maybe "Ghost Whisperer", which I've yet to see).

I agree!
and why did it have to be a Kolchak copy. I thought a better back story would have this Kolchak be ac ousin of the MacGavin character and he got obssesed with his uncle's old files and stories.

this show tried to have too much "shock" factor. plus the bad acting. :hscratch:

Rogue588 12-12-05 04:52 PM

That oughta be a perfect match for the other show they picked up. Passions.

rfduncan 12-13-05 08:09 AM

Well guess I'll leave that Season Pass intact so as to not forget this and miss it when it re-airs. I'd like to at least see all 10.

Geofferson 12-13-05 09:04 AM

I'd be curious to check out the 3 unaired episodes. Too bad they won't be airing for another 6 months or so...

Eddie W 12-13-05 09:11 AM

....and won't be available in hi def......
