It's official. Stargate: SG-1 is the longest running Sci-fi drama on American TV

Stargate has been picked up for season 10.

from Sci-Fi.com:

SG-1, Atlantis Renewed

SCI FI Channel announced that it has ordered a 10th season of Stargate SG-1 and a third season of its spinoff series, Stargate Atlantis. Production on both 20-episode seasons is slated to begin in early 2006 for summer premieres on SCI FI.

Heading into a 10th season, Stargate SG-1 becomes the longest-running SF drama in American television history, outlasting The X-Files, The Twilight Zone and every iteration of Star Trek. The first half of SG-1's ninth season has averaged 2.4 million viewers per week.

Stargate Atlantis has averaged more than 2.3 million viewers a week for the first half of its sophomore season.

SG-1 co-creator Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper will return as executive producers on both series.

Stargate SG-1 is produced by Double Secret Productions, in association with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. and Sony Pictures Television. Stargate Atlantis is produced by Acme Shark, in association with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. and Sony Pictures Television.

Hard to believe it's heading to Season 10 already. Good news though.

Ben Browder was as an excellent addition. Along
with guest star Claudia Black. Thinking about it
though, I guess it might be a slap in the face
of the scape fans since it on scifi.
Also I see they added Michaels Shanks wife as
the new doctor replacing Teryl Rotherly.
I always thought Teryl was under used in the series.

To be fair, the X-Files wasn't just sci-fi. Granted, the whole 9 years were the main focus but the later years also looked at the supernatural and evil humans.

Excellent news for a great series.

While I think the series has never reached dizzying heights, it certainly has had some great moments. And unlike many other long-running series, I've hardly ever thought, "What the hell have they done to this show?" or "They really have run out of ideas, haven't they?" or "This show should have been canceled 2 years ago." It's been nothing if consistent. Consistently good.

I've only watched this show on DVD but have kept up with some of the current cast changes on some of the threads here and at Gateworld. What's the general consensus, does it seem like the changes are working well for the show or are they changing the dynamic too much?

Wow, ten years. How long was McGyver on the air? That guy holds on to jobs like the Pope.

I'll agree with you there Groucho.
I've always tried to like Stargate and given it tons of trys but it's just not compelling enough to keep tuning in.

Why is this so common around here? In every Stargate thread there is someone bringing up how superior Farscape/Babylon 5/Small Wonder/insert show title here, is. Who cares. Why can't people enjoy a show for what it is and leave it at that. There is always in incessant need to threadcrap whenever Stargate is mentioned. Bunch of snobs I tell ya.

Get over it. It is an entertaining show that appeals to more than a small minority of people, and is obviously going to be on for some time.

Don't like it + don't watch it = Stargate threads, threadcrap free!

It's a reliable workhorse TV series, in my view. A few missteps here and there, and never exeedingly brilliant, but nearly always fun and worthwhile. Considering the creative team is now doing *two* shows, I think they've got a remarkably consistant and solid episode-making machine going up there, one that has managed to keep things fresh and enjoyable for a damn long time. I love the show for its cast, its good humor, and its habit of building most episodes from the backstory of prior episodes. Browder was a great addition, although I hope they do more with him, and I hope the Ori provide them with lots of new directions to take the arcs. Congrats to them!

Timewise, it's halfway there.

Total Time
days:hours:minutes

Doctor Who: 12:19:20
Stargate: 6:15:06

That's couting the movie and Stargate: Atlantis for Stargate, but also the TV specials and movies for Doctor Who. But then of course if you count the entire Star Trek series...

Star Trek: 22:07:52

Good to hear that!

It's amazing that the still consistently brilliant Stargate SG-1 has now lasted nearly a staggering decade and there is no serious drop in quality yet, although it could be in danger of outstaying it's welcome.

Never the less Stargate SG-1 remains one of my favourite sci-fi shows of all time alongside my personnel all time favourites such as Deep Space Nine, Farscape, Voyager and Space Above and Beyond.

I just heard a casting rumor for next year on both SG1 and Atlantis:

Spoiler:
The producers have approached Claudia Black to be a full-time cast member on SG1. Amanda Tapping is rumored to be splitting her time between SG1 and Atlantis (a full 22 episodes worth)

Gets big from me.

Not sure if this was in the above "black", but there is now confirmed casting for next season, which I suppose is seudo spoilerish. Since I don't know if it is what is in the "black" above, I could be a repeat. =O

Spoiler:
sci-fi.com is reporting the claudia black has indeed been picked up as a regular next season

no doubt many of you will be pleased by this.
