And if I wanted to see women/girls in bikinis there are plenty of other shows where it would be the norm.

My guess is that the writers are just padding the episodes. Others have posted, when the show first started, that it felt more like a mini-series and wondered how they would make it last a few seasons much less one. Half the show is "E.T./Close Encounters Redux/Let's put girls in bikinis". The other half isn't bad... but barely.

I'm almost ready to cheer for the creatures to eat everyone up already :D
